render slaves

hi all

i am thinking about getting a render slave as a companion to my laptop, which i use to do all my work on, but not sure what spec these slaves should be. are xeon servers (was looking at dell) good value? or is that an expensive way to go?

a Xeon is most likely a bit pricey for what you get performance wise vs buying and decent mid range i7 quad in a consumer case with a bunch of ram and a cheap video card.
