Good Morning ALL!!!

We are looking into the renderboxx farms at our office… office is moving to laptops (a whole other bad idea) regardless, does anyone have any experience using any of the boxxs’

Render Farm 10100 Series - exclusively powered by quad-core Intel xeon
renderBOXX Classic 8300 - with quad-core Intel Xeon
Renderboxx classic 7500 - now with quad-core AMD opteron

Any insight with regards to 1.5 and DR, backburner, and how Vray handles rendering… ie, 2 buckets, 6 buckets, etc…

the opterons will save your power bill and should be cheaper for the same clock speed since none of these things will over clock they are probably a good buy.

either the intel or the amd’s will treat you well. dual quads all the way, pick the fastest processor you can afford, and slap 4 gigs of ram in there.. (or more if you’re planning to use a fully 64bit pipeline)

they’re quite fast :slight_smile: a bit pricey, but they’re good for support. (IE: I’ve had them overnight me pretty much anything i request for the machines while under warranty.)

minimum 8 gigs. id seriously consider 12.

how many buckets would be rendering at the same time with these? im still waiting on a response from them…

1 Bucket per processor core. If you connect to 4 machines for DR each with 2 quad core processors, then you’ll see 4 * 2 * 4 = 32 buckets, plus whatever your local workstation contributes.

Hehe… really? which one?

I know they’ve shifted their product line a bit… the ones offered through that link are similar to IBM’s Blade concept, whereas in 2005, they only offered the 1U systems. But really it’s just a way to cram more machines into the same amount of rack space.

I havent worked with boxx render nodes for a long time now. But when we did have them, their support for superrior. So just for that I think its worth it.

Plus the actual machines are rock solid, stable and so on.

Theyre really good. Had no hardware issues at all after initial setup.

I was DR’ing with 48 buckets this afternoon. :smile:

I actually feel physically sick looking at those buckets.

I was pretty chuffed having been able to convince the company to sort me out an 8 core render farm using our old render workstations (2x dual-dual core opteron 2.0ghzs) and replacing them with new workstations based on the q6600!

How on earth do you even start to convince your company to buy this kind of kit!?!? :shock:

Hi im lucky enough to own the company… hopefully by the end of the year we should have 70 nodes, a mix of dual’s and quads…

I am fighting to get a new decent photo printer at the moment as well, went for a demo yesterday for an HP Z2100 (circa £2k). I work for a company which is fundamentally a commercial catering design house and I am the only dedicated visualiser, obviously this causes issues with how the company views its financial priorities! :frowning:

I think I am doing alright though and it can only get better!

I rememebr when i was in fulltime employment and trying to get a new scanner! … the scan used to come out green lolol … some companies are sooo tight that they do not see what is important.
