rendering from within a piece of VRayEnvironmentFog Geo -- VRay for Maya

Hello everyone,

Just registered to the forum as I’m having trouble with VRay for Maya Environment Fog. The problem that I’m having is that whenever my rendercam is within a piece of Geo with the VRayEnvironmentFog volumetric shader it renders black. The connections are correct as it renders as expected if the cam is outside the containment geo, but whenever I test it on the inside… black. I tried reversing the normals of the containment geo and I get a “lit” render, but no fog.

Our thinking about using this method is that containing fog to an isolated volume will be quicker than applying it to the entire scene via the environment fog option in the render globals. Is this a known issue?

Currently, I think the only way to achieve this, is to create a global environment volume, and attach your object as a gizmo.
envfog_gizmo.zip (7.95 KB)

Thanks… this is exactly what I was trying to do! Kind of a round-about way to accomplish it though, any plans to improve this in the future?

There are always plans to improve, the problem is when we will get to that  This issue specifically is somewhat complicated to solve in a different way.

Best regards,
Vlado

Hi,
I tried to connect a 3D solid fractal into the fog density and the sphere becomes black.
Is it a bug ?

It’s really not much difficult to make a black sphere with env fog :). Attach a scene and I’ll tell you what is wrong.
