Rendering mossy between pavers

I am trying to render moss [or thyme or similar plant] growing in the cracks in-between flagstones on a patio. The image with the bench is an example image. I made the cracks a separate group hovering 1/8" above the flagstone texture, and applied a grass texture and played with the height settings. It won’t render as 3D. I am guessing it’s because the “cracks” are only 1" wide. Is there anything else I can do to get this effect right?

was it made with a cutout image to only get grass on the cracks?

I think this is gonna be tricky in enscape without modelling the shape of the bulgy plants around the flagstones and all the ways I can think of are incredibly manual which will make any area very painstaking to do.

You’ll get a decent result using a mossy material - but it needs to have a shape (like a rock for example)

If you are using sketchup then it might be a question for the sketchup forums as to how you could perhaps model that shape.

Hi – it’s actually not that difficult with the right combination of tools and the right ‘grass/moss’ asset.
Here is a quick and purely parametric test with random tools and any small grass asset for example. However, setting the joint to grass material will not work.

kmgRMC, here is another less than 4 minutes quick test much closer to your not working grass approach and closer to your shown image template. Closer because this example is based on a face distibution rather than along edges…
And again: completely parametric and without having to manually fiddle with a single asset!!!

I was trying to figure it out under a tight deadline, and when that deadline passed, I was focused on other projects and didn’t check to see if more ideas were trickling in. Circling back around to this know, and it looks like a great approach! Thank you.

As already mentioned, this approach with random tools or the for such tasks perhaps with the more sophisticated Scatter (which can use proxies) is very simple because the parametric function does everything so quickly and most of all for you effortlessly.
If it happens, you can show us what you came up with and how you did it :wink:
