Revit Decals on a Textured Surface

I’m trying to apply a decal to a wall with a textured surface (bricks) but obviously am wanting the decal to sit on the wall as it would in real life. Currently it just sits on the face of the wall but doesn’t map itself to the applied brick texture - is there a way i can do this? Or is this a limitation of the software currently?

You can do this but it’ll be tedious.

First, the Decal tool won’t work. You can apply Bump but not adjust the bump value concurrent with the brick wall using the Decal tool. You need to apply the material of the image and another material as the bump. (in your case, the brick wall). This can’t be done as a decal but it can be done as a regular Generic Material. Here’s how:

  1. Create a regular Generic Material for the image
  2. Set the Bump of the brick wall as the bump for your image (you can also adjust the amount of bump  )
  3. Make sure to specify the real-world size of the image and brick (they’ll likely be different values)
  4. Use the Split Face tool in Revit to split the surface of the wall and sketch the desired size / shape for the image
  5. Use the Paint tool to paint the material of the image inside the region of the split face
  6. Spend a lot of time tweaking the XY offset of the bump of the brick material (of your image) to align with the bump of the brick wall material.

Hope this helps.
