hi,
i don`t know if this is a bug or a decision ? when you right click on a value in 3dsmax it quick sets it to 0 which is pretty useful. in vray3.4 and below the behaviour in the render menus worked this way too however in vray3.5 right click now sets the value to it`s default state rather than 0. not sure how any else feels, personally i prefer the right click to zero(or minimise) a value.
i appreciate it`s possibly a minor thing however it does now contradict how the rest of 3dsmax works.
cheers

I experienced the same, but as I figured out, they don’t go to zero anymore, but to their default values. Quite annoying.
edit: didn’t read your whole post before replying ![]()
I noticed that, too. I thought it was some kind of error in specific scenes, but it is in all my scenes now. Indeed, that is quite unfortunate.
Hello!
Yes, right-click on the spinner arrows reverts the V-Ray settings to their default values now. The functionality was modified intentionally since the default values are optimized for general use.
You are right about that, it’s different from the max behavior, but this way it’s made more user-friendly for artists with no in-depth knowledge of V-Ray.
Best regards,
Margarita
IMO it should have been set with something like Shift + right click to get default values. This way, “old” users don’t get a different behavior than 3dsmax, while offering some user-friendly approach for new users.
My 2 cents ![]()
hi,
i was just writing a response that got way too long and possibly `speechy` but i think you have it there NicoC. a much more elegant solution, it preserves consitency with max and adds precisely the simple functionality margarita mentions.
nice one

* it`s mainly because when using the progressive renderer the 1 minute default timeout doesn`t seem to suit any real-world situation and i have to set it to 0 every time to be able to use it.
I will probably override that default behavior for this parameter specifically. It’s annoying for me too in this specific instance.
Best regards,
Vlado
hi Vlado,
hehe, i know right.
cheers

For me its the dynamic memory limit. I have loads of RAM, so I always set it to 0.
Yeah that’s how I discovered it too.
God, this annoys me. I always think that Max is broken.
In all honesty, users that aren’t ‘that familiar’ with vray, aren’t aware that right click on a spinner puts the value to its minimum. So just, please, put it back. Don’t “fix” what’s not broken.
I`d have thought most users would be more familiar with how 3dsmax works(right click to zero) besides you can always reset the renderer, although i suppose you`d lose the rest of the values you`ve changed. i still think NicoC had it with shift-right click for default.

I actually find it really useful to reset to defaults. I mean you rarely wanna set something to 0 in the render settings so it totally makes sense to me. A little getting used to of course but other than that it’s fine by me.
I don’t think the discussion is about that point - it sure can be useful. IMHO the issue is more about how to restore these defaults … Shift+right click would be a much more elegant approach, while keeping the general right-click behavior of any 3dsmax spinner. Best of both worlds if you ask me ![]()
There is a specific value for a default in the paramblock of max classes, to which properly written UIs should default to when a spinner is right-clicked.
That people did UIs backwards, leaving stuff out out of lazyness, and that you got used to it, does not make it right, nor any bit more efficient.
If 0 is the value you so crave, well, that’s a single keypress, it could hardly be made any more efficient (enter a spinner, and then zero-tab your way through. why use a mouse, at all?).
And that’s only for when 0 is actually the value one wants. RMC to zero does absolutely nothing for anyone which would expect slightly more intelligent a behaviour from UI components (say, LC subdivs, Noise Threshold, or a sphere radius, a light intensity, the examples are literally endless.).
Complex, multi-digit defaults are a lot harder to recover once lost, you’ll agree, and it’s our view that those specifically are what values should always be reset to if a user RMCs on a spinner: not shift, not control, as the feature Is there to aid precisely those which lost their way.
In fact, the behaviour is implemented across most of the relevant UIs, not just the render settings panel, specifically to have default, optimal values ready to be used at any time.
Hi Lele,
Well, tbh, you’ve definitely got one point here, your opinion makes sense to me … I’ve used 3dsmax for 17 years now, and the RMC to set any spinner back to 0 is now an hard habit ! if it’s complicated to change, let’s keep the current RMC behavior then. It’s really low priority I guess.
There was a suggestion for a different behaviour if one clicked the upper or lower arrow, or with modifiers (i’d not be opposed to a shift/control click setting spinners to 0, following my above statement), but I am not sure how much work would that turn out to be (fixing the UIs behaviour like this was already quite a load on the person which took care of it. A special kind of torture, if you asked me…), nor if it would turn out to confuse people through the giving of choices, rather than “just” force them to take the best help we can give, so to speak.
There are pros and cons to both sides of the argument, so let’s keep the debate up, lest we miss some synthesis which may benefit us more! ![]()
Can you please change this to be the same as the standard Max behaviour? I just encountered this thing again in the blend material. Right clicking the blend amount percentage doesn’t do anything, because someone defined 100% to be the default value. Before I could just right click the spinner to set the amount to 0, which I have to do a lot for testing purposes while creating shaders.
Really, this is totally contrary to the rest of Max, and very un-intuitive!
Yeah please don’t fix what’s not broken. Default values could be shift + rightclick or similar.
