Ripple effect in Smoke

Currently I’m messing around with phoenix to get a better understanding, yesterday while playing with the smoke settings I notice small ripples (Hope I’m using the right word for it) in my render.

Does this effect happen because of wrong render setting or sim settings?

Using ir/lc as render method.

seems like light cache artifact. make single rendering without light cache for test

because I’m an idiot I accidentally overwrote the file so I have a slightly different light setup but the artifacts are still visible without light cache.

Lightcache in phx rendering rollout.

hm, does not seem to be the light cache, well can i see the scene?
send it to phoenix@chaosgroup.com

Turned off LC inside the phoenix render rollout

ripples still there. Only difference much longer render time.

@Ivaylo

I send you the file.

yes, i expected that after you second shot, because the LC artifacts appear only in very dense smokes, but the smoke above is not dense.
i have one question - is this the cell size? because the rest smoke looks detailed, or it’s just displacement?

If I understand your question correctly than yes I think it’s mostly displacement.

well, this is a bug in the displacement algo (affects only the new volumetric displacement that was introduced the last release)
i made two shots of frame 13 to show the difference.

Is there an chance the bug will be fixed in one of the next releases of phoenix? And thanks again for your responses.

yes, it’s fixed already, the second image shows the render result after the bug was removed.

Ah thanks for the clarification.
