RTX 2080 vs Ryzen 7 2700?

I’m using V-ray 3.6 Sketchup, and will be upgrading to Next this July.

My current system is:
Ryzen 1700 @ 3.7Ghz
32GB RAM
GTX 1060 6GB

My Ryzen7 scores 1:24 on Vray bench, my GTX 1060 6GB scores 2:02

Without considering workflow changes because of GPU rendering,

Would popping in an RTX 2080 8GB into my exising computer shorten my rendering time more VERSUS buying another PC (Ryzen 2700 based) and putting it in my swarm?

They’re about the same amount of money.

Also, what is this i’m reading about RTX 2070 rendering as fast as 2080 8GB (or even better)?

The benchmark tool uses different scenes, you are not meant to compare CPU vs GPU

The RTX 2080 is 700 Euros, a new PC with a Ryzen 2700X will be 1200 Euros at least to be descent and You will need 32 GB of RAM at least. You shouldn’t cheap on things like case, PSU or RAM

If you will rely on GPU rendering the 2080 route is better and faster in my humble view. The 2080 is way faster than a 2700 with V-ray GPU, and you can always buy another 2080 later on and use NVlink to get double your VRAM
And it is just peace of mind, you don’t need to deal with distributed rendering for good + lower electricity bill

It is not as fast, not even close
There are many good 2080 cards outthere with different price tags. Try to find one with blower style cooling like the Asus Turbo
And again, the 2070 doesn’t support NVlink.. which is big deal if you want to be future proof

I would recommend you keep your 1060 and add the 2080 to your setup. Use the 2080 for GPU rendering and the 1060 for viewport and your monitors(it has to be in the first PCIe slot and you will connect all your monitors to it)
You will need 700 Watts PSU for this to work and extra 1x8pin + 1x6pin cables

I ended up getting an RTX 2070 for 460 Euros

So, I’m now using Ryzen 1700@3.6Ghz + GTX1060 6GB + RTX2070.

With VRay Next CUDA GPU, it is SIGNIFICANTLY MUCH faster than my existing Vray 3.6 Swarm of 2x i7-7700 + 2x Ryzen 1700.

My 3.6 licenses are expiring in 3-months. I’m excited to move to Next GPU. I’m still evaluating if I should get 4x 2070’s, or 2x 2080 Ti’s. I’m not convinced with the 2080; they’re too far from the 2070 and too close to the 2080Ti in terms of cost
