I have mentioned it before, but I don’t think I have placed it in the wishlist forum. I would love for the VFB to have rules and guides like Photoshop. When setting up composition they would be indispensable. Currently, I literally take out a ruler and hold it to my screen, placing tape on my screen to hold places.
Good idea. Maybe an option to overlay an SVG with opacity control would be more versatile, so everyone can load his own guides.
I think people are doing that with backgrounds in the VFB.

You can also use the safe frames in the max viewport and set them up for the rule of 3rds. Thats what i do.
Yes, I do that for thirds and it works well.
I used that earlier in MAX, but it didn’t work in 2017-2018, if I remember correctly. I’ll try again.
Will this even work in newer versions of Max, last update was back in 2013. and I hear it doesn’t work in 2013 or 2014 and I have a feeling it won’t work in newer versions either. It’s a nice idea but seems it needs updating. Not tried it myself. but if they updated it, so it works in all current versions it would certainly be a great (and free) alternative to the one I discovered
Seems to work in 2018 (I downloaded version 1.5.1).
Just has the annoying behaviour of automatically turning on safe frames for the active viewport. However, this seems to be by design and not a bug. So as soon as you activate any viewport it will also turn safe frames there and show the guides. Does that make sense? Source is available and the license allows changes - so it could be modified to only shows the guides on a viewport that has “Show Safe Frames” turned on for example. That is what I would have done.
