Hello
I’ ve notticed on a recent project that some shadows are not dispalyed correctly in the render. In a scene from aprox. 5 m distance I can’t see the shadows but when I change the camera clorser to the point of interest the shadows appear.
Hi @ADDITIVE , and thanks for this report.
Right away given that you’re likely still using Enscape with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti I reckon these screenshots are taken with “Ray-Traced Artificial Light” (found in the General Settings) enabled? If so, does it make any difference if you remove some of the lights in your scene in regards to the shadow distance? And last but not least, perhaps you could share this scene with us if we’ll require it?
Thanks a lot in advance once more.
Just to make very sure I understand fully, this screenshot now has Ray-Traced Sun Shadows enabled, (which we advice keeping enabled in any case) but Ray-Traced Artificial Lights are disabled? If you enable both (basically all Ray-Tracing options), you get missing shadows still? Is there any chance you could then share the project with? I’d send you a direct message with more details if that’s possible.
Thanks for your quick response! Then it made sense why there’s a certain shadow cutoff given that non-ray traced artificial light sources are simply more limited by nature compared to their ray-traced counterpart especially.
Just to make sure it’s even clearer as to why ray-traced artificial lights provide a more realistic output you can refer to this prior blog article here.
If you still experience any issues or I’m missing something here please let me know of course. ![]()
@Demian_Gutberlet 's answer is completely right, however in this particular case I’m still surprised, that the shadows maps are not showing at that distance as it looks like there’s not a huge number of light sources placed in that room (unless they’re all directly behind the camera). Usually having around 100 light sources in an the visible area is completely fine. If you don’t mind I’d still be interested to have a closer look at what’s going on. Could you share the Sketchup project through private message to @Demian_Gutberlet if possible?
Hi Clemens
I just messaged Demian with the link for the sketchup scene. I am curios with the conclusion ![]()
Great, thanks a lot!
I just confirmed there are >400 lights in the scene, especially some extremely bright ones on the outside, which basically “take away” the shadow map assignment priority of those lights placed in the view inside. This explains the reported behavior.
From a technical point of view I’d generally advise against placing a large number of Enscape light sources closely together as “fill lights”/“ambient lights” to bump the overall brightness in an interior scene if possible and rather try to rely on natural bounce light, since we have support for multi-bounce GI.
Thanks Clemens
I will retry with another light scenario .
