Version: Sketchup Pro 2020
While my computer is not a powerhouse i5-4690K & 16GB memory it’s not particularly pathetic.
My current model is 190K edges, 110K faces and I’ve noticed that when I start bringing in models from the 3D warehouse for things like baths, beds etc. it’s become noticeably slower with odd pauses.
Is there some other technique cinema hd I should be using here or is it just a case of not having enough capacity?

@rekslei , while the CPU and about 8-16GB of memory are important for running Enscape well, it’s really mainly the graphics card - Can you let me know which GPU you have built into your system, and can you please make sure to acquire and install either the latest AMD or NVIDIA drivers after downloading them from their homepage directly depending on the model? Thanks a lot in advance.
NEVER bring things from the SU warehouse directly into your working model … LET ME REPEAT … NEVER!
99% of the content submitted to the 3DW is by users, 60% of which (in my opinion) are completely incompetent.
For example, you find a nice model of a bath, you import it. Not only is it at some stupid scale, it’s 1 mile from the origin and has 1/2 a house in there that’s hidden … Oh, and of course, it’s inside out.
ALWAYS start a new SU model, find what you want from 3DW and then explode and gut it down to just the bits you want, trash the materials, run cleanup, group or component it and ONLY THEN copy that result into your model.
And don’t assume the manufacturer’s models are a good bet (some/most are):
Imagine a window, now all you want is the accurate visual representation of the window but… the manufacturer has built EVERY component of the window down to the rubber seals, the insides of the hollow aluminium extrusions and the screws holding the handle on.
That one window could easily be 10x the size (poly count) of an entire house.
3DW is a wonderful resource and a massive curse.
Very good points - To add to that, this is exactly the reason why the VRAM (graphics card memory) of your GPU is thus also running full, especially if there are simply too many (high-polygon) objects in the scene which can either result in really bad stuttering (which you seem to be already experiencing to some degree) or even crashes.
A GPU upgrade with one that has more VRAM helps in most cases, but may not be necessary depending on the scene optimization. There is a reason why all of our Assets have a limited polygon count while still trying to maintain a solid appearance. Really high-polygon models are rather used in offline rendering situations.
If it’s in SketchUp itself that you are having the issues, then usually it’s down to more organic shapes with high edge counts that cause big performance drops. Plants and curved chairs and sofas seem to the the ones that cause the most pain.
Disabling “profiles” from current style will help a lot with the performance.
- I’d also suggest running Cleanup3 on your model to try and remove extraneous edges and faces - which will help with this as well as purging unused components - which increase memory usage.
- Filter items from the 3Dwarehouse by smaller poly counts
- Try and avoid using the models directly within Sketchup where you can - try converting these to custom assets in Enscape and placing the proxies.
- Transmutr can make this process of building your own enscape ready library easier too
SketchUp itself is super CPU biased and is very single threaded, so it won’t really be using 3 of the 4 cores that you CPU has.
