1. open the material editor,
2. Selected the material that requires bumping (your stone texture)
3. Scroll down to the bottom of the material where the sub-menu titled MAPS is.
4. Tick the box marked BUMP
5. This will now allow you to click on previously greyed out, this will take you to another dialog box.
6. Below the preview button in the new dialog box, select BITMAP from the drop down menu.
7. This will then give you a load of options on the right hand side of the dialog box now.
8. Under the sub-menu titled BITMAT BUFFER, click on the box next to the right hand side of the white bar called FILE
9. This will open other dialog to navigate to where the Bump map you wish to use is saved on your computer. Find it and select it.
10. This location of the bump map will now appear in the previously empty white box on step 8.
11. Click OK
12. If you have successfully mapped a bump map the previously will now look like
13. Use the multiplier number, set a 1.0 as default, to control how much bump occurs.
There is a lot of steps but its very easy to do once you’ve done it! I thought id make it as clear as pos.
Hope this answers your question, but once you’ve got the bump map working, especially for that texture in question… read up on displacement, especially when viewed closely,
But the flat version does look better than before tho, even though its flat Maybe I need to do something additional but I dont know what, I tired so many things.
Use Displacement instead bump map. Remember that the geometry with displacement shouldn’t touch other geometry without displacement, so you have to group the geometry with displacement material.
you clearly have it working now,
like i said with certain materials especially close up bump mapping will not be sufficient. Bump maps do not alter the geometry of the face, they just make it appear to be textured, so the edges of the face will always be perfectly straight, even though the face could appear very rough!
Like myself and Fpedrogo have said use displacement, for this use exactly the same steps as the bump process, but just choose the box below BUMP on the maps submenu titled DISPLACEMENT.
BUT BUT BUT…
like Fpedrogo said, in order for Displacement to work, all faces that have the material you intend to displace applied must be grouped. So from that image you just posted you need to select the two faces together and GROUP them.
a bit of work in photoshop on your displacement map will help. notice the overly jaggy edges around each stone…? softening the edges will remove this and make the stone appear more natural.
again in PS take your coloured texture image and desaturate it, then play with the levels to give you another bump map with more contrast (your previous map works well for displacement but its mainly Black and white) a bump map needs more tones of grey. Save this as image as a new bump map. Now use your new map as a bump map working alongside your displacement map, this will ‘roughen up’ stones appearance.
