I’ve been having some issues with Corona when it massively slows down UI when using IR; everything is slow and takes a few seconds or more. This could be anything from opening dialogs, editing materials or any other parameter within 3ds Max. This only happens when running IR, and the only thing that helps is to reduce threads from the default -1 to -10 or -15. Seems to be only happening in Corona with other renderers being fine. The speed itself of the render is also good and is matching benchmark test results, no overclocking.
Which version of Corona? (please give version number, not “latest” as sometimes folks think they have the latest but are unaware there is a newer version ). Which version of Max and which OS is also always handy too.
With SMT disabled it works perfectly, all actions in UI are super quick! Overall performance has dropped down by about 35% though, as expected (according to Corona benchmark)
So this happens even with latest-gen Threadripper and even in low-core version? Hm, not great :- (. Because latest Ryzens are incredibly quick with no need to disable SMT.
If possible, can you check if with SMT enabled, does V-Ray works fine when Corona is not installed? Is there any difference at all? You can use a trial version of V-Ray.
I also suffer daily with the slow UI when using IR with Corona. I almost hate using IR because I feel I loose so much time waiting for dialogs and material properties to update.

I’ve found IR (and the system using IR) to be significantly more responsive than my 3970x and 3990’s and menus less laggy too. That said, I’ve never actually run Corona on a non-threadripper (started with the 1950x and onwards) so maybe I’m missing something amazing by not going Ryzen or even Intel…I really thought hard about the 9950x but ended up needing render speed as well as IR. I guess I should try disabling SMT to see if things get even better but I hate to lose the render speed. ‘Slow’ is so relative it’s hard to gauge but things are generally pretty good for me.
Caveat: Once and a while it will grind to a crazy halt…mouse lag, worried it’ll crash etc. I haven’t pinpointed why but usually I have a zillion things going, network access, etc and it passes within 5-15 seconds. It only happens every few days when I’m really driving things hard so I haven’t hunted too hard. Otherwise it’s really quite snappy. Anyway, will definitely be watching this thread but hopefully my fairly good experience with IR means your problem is solvable\improvable and not endemic to your choice of CPU.
Have you tried removing any hardware like one of your 5090s (or a 128gb of your 256gb of ram) in case the PSU or some other component is struggling a bit with that setup? Random sidenote: Going from an old 2080 Ti to a 4500 ADA was almost more lifechanging than going from a 3970x to a 9980x
