I get to a point sometimes in some of my projects where i run into this issue…while its rendering..riiiiiight before it goes into the 2nd rendering pass..it gets caught on this…and then never continues…I mean i am sure it would after i left it going for over 20 hours but i am on a strict deadline..
We have problems with transparency. if you have transparency on the diffuse layer or on the refraction layer, the Light Cache process take forever. Don’t use transparency until we find how to resolve this issue.
Does it happen every time or you guys not sure? Coz I’m sure I used transparency (when I actually made diffuse layer semi-transparent) and I didn’t notice any big changes.
I’d be very curious to know if there are specific conditions this occurs. I think I’ve run into something like that once when I thought it was a displacement problem, and seemed to go away when I adjusted the material. If there is any guidance in this issue that would be great, since like SKIF, I’ve used transparency on diffuse and refraction layer without difficulty.
I have this issue every single time that I use transparency, specialy with a lot of bounces. Basicaly on interior render. If you are rendering exterior the problem is not very noticeable.
Is there any workaround that involves using the DMC as a secondary engine instead of Light Cache? I saw in a couple of your tutorials where you had DMC as your secondary engine. Would that work faster than Light Cache for scenes with transparency?
I don’t know if this will help or not, but I think I found a quick workaround for the transparency issue, at least when it comes to making glass. You could simply create a material that only has a refraction and reflection layer, no diffuse layer. Just make sure the reflection layer is on top of the refraction layer.
I’ve gotten much faster rendering times using this method.

The problem is not the refraction or the reflection layer. Also is not the diffuse layer, it’s the transparency option in the diffuse layer. If you have 100% black (0,0,0) or 100% white( 255,255,255) on the transparency option you will not have any issue either. The problem is when you use grays color on that option to have a semi transparency diffuse layer.
I have worked with alterations in these parameters and have never had any problems so far,
even in the halftones for transparencies… only once, but because I (the observer) was in interior of Glass window behind me ;D ;D
