Is there any way to achieve a realistic specular wood varnish in Max (that is also perhaps incorporated into Vraydisplacement)?
Probably, maybe post an image of your “ideal”

I don’t see the problem?
Find a good wood texture, make a displacement map out of it too and add some glossies to your material, should work fine I think

I would use a shellac material, to float the varnish, this way you can ignore the bump for the underlying material and produce a thin layer effect over the wood. Use a black material with specular/reflection properties only.
Well, according to Zuli what I really wanted was a falloff map in reflections and adjusting some glossies. It works well. I guess I was getting specular highlights a little bit confused there…
hi
if you have managed to get a good wood material could you post the settings including the ones with the falloff map.
