Hi,
Im in the process of making a simple syrup pour in maya, i have tried many ways to emit the liquid, from a sphere, cone, cylinder, i have also tried surface force, volume brush and inject but every time i sim, no matter what the shape is the liquid pour comes out with square edging.
At mesh time i have tried smoothing out but this does not get rid of the squareness, how can i get round this and what causes it to do so?
Hello,
Can you show us your settings in the Dynamics rollout?
How about if you lower the surface tension to something like 0.1 or 0.2?
Hi Georgi,
The lowering of the surface tension worked thank you, i did have quite high from following a tutorial.
I ended up re making it all from scratch and tweaking each parameter until i reached the desired look and feel.
Thanks
Hi,
I have run into another problem with my sim, this time on export to alembic.
I need to export the mesh out as an alembic but when doing so the smoothing level isnt the same as the Maya mesh within Phoenix.
I have the settings in the simulator for Maya mesh looking good, see top picture, nice and smooth using the iso level etc but then when i export as alembic and load into the same scene with the same lighting, same shaders i get the below image which isnt smooth at all.
Any help would be appreciated
Hey,
What type of smoothing do you use over the Phoenix simulator? From my tests here the Phoenix smoothing is exported correctly.
On my side I tested smoothing the Liquid channel from the Input rollout and the smoothing from the Rendering rollout of the Phoenix simulator.
Hi Georgi, this is what i have
Which versions of Maya and Phoenix are you using?
How about if you try enabling the checkbox for the Liquid in the Grid Channel smoothing in the Input rollout?
I checked the box for the liquid, leaving it at 0, still the same output
Im using Maya 2024.2 and Phoenix 5.21
Is it possible to try with the latest Phoenix 5.24? If this still doesn’t work, can you send over the scene with a single cache file so that we can take a look?
Thanks!
Hey Georgi,
Updated to the latest version, it looked slightly better but still not as it should be.
Please find the scene, and 10cached frames attached.
Appreciate your time on this
Spoon_Syrup_Test_v04.zip (1.66 MB)
Looks like the caches didn’t come through.
Can you zip them and maybe send them via google drive or dropbox or something simialar? Probably the file size limit in the forum prevents them from uploading.
Thanks!
Sorry, my fault, hadnt copied the cache over. Try this

Hey,
Thanks for the files! The scene seems to render correctly on my machine.
I’m using Phoenix 5.21 Official Release build.
Here are my steps:
1. open the provided scene and load the caches
2. go to frame 109 and render
3. select the mesh and Cache > Alembic Cache > Export Selection to Alembic (exported frames 100 -110)
4. hide the Simulator
5. Cache > Alembic Cache > Import Alembic files that I created in step 3
6. Assign Existing Material > aiStandardSurface3
7. go to frame 109 and render again
Both renders are identical for me - attachment is added.
Could you tell us your exact steps, so we can try to reproduce the problem on our side?
Thanks!
Hi Slavina,
Thanks for looking into this for me
I do exactly the same as you, but when i load the cache back into my scene it didnt look the same.
So the fact that it works for you made me go back and re export out the alembic, in doing so i double checked the output settings and found that the No Normals check box was checked for some reason, turned this off and works all fine!
School boy error!
Appreciate your time
Great, I’m glad we figured it out!
Cheers!
