I textured this pendant light in Sketchup using the plug-in “UV TOOLS” and by selecting the Cylindrical Map option. The result looks great in Sketchup but when I render it in V-Ray it comes out all wrong. For some reason the texture becomes tiled onto all the faces of the model. Does anyone know what might be the problem?
i have also a diificulty before using UV tools. When i exported them with max, each texture applied with each face were saved. in the engd if i have faceted cylinder i ended up having hundreds of texture. IT seems to me that the way UV tools script work differently the way vray read textures. I dont have any answer, i guess to make it work both the developer of UV tool script (Dale) and chaos group should copy notes on how their script treat uv mapping.

Does anyone know of another way to texture a rounded object like this and get it to render appropriately? I just assumed that V-Ray would translate the texture as it’s shown in Sketch-up but it sounds like that’s not the case given this example. Any help would be appreciated.
Are you sure the material is applied to the faces individually? I’ve only seen this result when the material is applied to the group/ component and not the underlying faces. Hope that helps.

I dont think UV tools will work with V-Ray currently. You might have to click each face and Make Unique Texture. V-Ray doesnt play nice when you start stretching and skewing a texture on a face, I assume that UV tools is also an issue.
I’ve never had a problem using UV tools, but I’ve only used it on fairly simple geometry. We support all texture modification, except for skew. We just can’t get the correct UV info out of SketchUp when that type of modification is used for some reason. Making the texture unique will certainly fix the issue, but it’s not a very fun work around.
Can you tell me what version on V-Ray you are using? This project has since been completed but using a different method, but I would still like to know for future projects. The rendering you posted was exactly what I was trying to get but for some reason I was not getting the same result as you were able to achieve. I agree, the work around mentioned would not be fun at all. Especially when dealing with multiple objects like this with a wide range of materials. I sure hope V-Ray and/or Sketch-up comes out with a better way to handle situations like this in the future!
