I was commissioned by DK Books to produce over 600 3D illustrations for the Complete Bike Owners Manual released earlier this year. These included full page spreads of cutaway detail, step-by-step repair and installation instructions, cover art, chapter covers, full exploded views and various other instructional images. Of course everything was rendered in Max with VRay. Modeling was split between Max and Modo. I used VrayClipper for all the cutaways. HDRLS for all the lighting setup.
I built upon a bike model I had built a few years ago and made a complete model of a carbon road bike with all internals included in order to show the breakdown and repair of the various parts. I also had a second full model of a mountain bike created by Gino Marcomini and Ronnie Olsthoorn as well as various parts and tools completed by Moises Guerra Armas.
Thanks Garry, the fully wrapped bar tape was done with a displacement map hand painted in Photoshop. The step-by-step had to be all modeled though as I had to should how it was wrapped.
s0real, nope, didn’t get any CAD for this. The road bike I modeled myself from on-hand reference (I have almost this exact bike) the mountain bike was also modeled, with my own mountain bike as reference, by Gino Macomini and Ronnie Olsthoorn. I shot a whole series of photos from which a scan was created by Ronnie but proved to be only useful as a proportional guide. It looked like it was caught in a snowstorm.
Depending on the frame material and how badly it is stuck: you can use boiling water poured on the frame along with WD40 for steel or aluminium and freeze spray on the post for carbon. Good luck with that though, there are no guarantees.
