Friend of mine just recieved a workstation built by a pc company to his spec. It was crashing, and he discovered they had undervolted it. At stock voltage it hit 68 degrees and starts throttling. Vrms get extremely hot too. Spec is:
Coolermaster sl600m case
Corsair h150 pro cooler
Asus prime x399a mobo
128gb corsair vengeance 2933 ram
He suspects he skimped a bit on the motherboard as the vrm cooling isnt great.. But why is the cpu overheating? Thats a triple radiator cooler, so should handle it id guess. Does seem strange the cooling head is square, so leaves a few mm of cpu bare on either side.. But apparently its compatible..?
Case is a “chimney effect” cooling one, so 3 fans at top blowing out, and 3 at bottom suckin in, rest of case no vents. Radiator has been tried both top and bottom of case. Id be fiddling with it myself, but im 3000 km away.
The Asus Prime X399a is not designed for the 2990wx,
It is an entry level Mobo, and probably the cheapest x399 board in the market. Did he choose this specific Mobo or did they choose it for him?
Builders usually cheap on parts to make the most profit, which really sucks
For the 2990wx he should get Zenith extreme Alpha, or MSI Meg Creation or Aorus Extreme
These 3 Mobos have proper VRM cooling and 11 power phases for Overclocking, they were designed specifcially for this CPU
Undervolting this CPU is shady as fuck, and is probably reason behind the instability.
About CPU temps, 68 degrees at stock is quite high, using the exact same cooler here and the same CPU, it runs at 61 degrees C overclcoked to 3.8 GHZ on all cores
Your friend might have gotten a faulty cooler unit, or too much thermal paste or too little.. many things can make temps go very high
and btw, he should use Ryzen master app for monitoring CPU temps, or using HWinfo app, the correct temperature is Tcdie
Other apps will report temps incorrectly, so he should be careful
The H150i Pro is one of the best AIOs in the market, and it is compatible with Threadrippers, I have used it in many builds

In other words, is the person sure the incoming air has thermal capacity left, and plenty of it (notice said capacity is also a function of air humidity.)?
Also, it’s enough to have the cooler not perfectly flush with the CPU to get into all sorts of trouble.
we have some render machine with 2990WX-32cores mounted on X399A and working like a charm BUT they are in the server room with AC at 22-23°C.
In this condition they run at 45°C idle and 74°C load.
They are in a “classic” desktop case with a “nothing special” cpu cooler.
Anyway Ryzen need some very good cooling system so in our case the conditioned room makes the real difference.
thanks for the replies guys. location is london so unlikely to be an ambient temp issue. Motherboard was his suggestion, not supplier, he thought if it had the right socket/chipset, it should be ok. Builder should really have pointed out motherboard wasnt ideal if so. they admitted they had issues with the build (hence undervolting it to cool it down.. not a professional solution at all imho especially as it crashed during rendering. one would assume that they also tried reseating the cooler, but who knows. i believe he is sending it back, and they have offered to try alternative motherboard and case..
given your replies im tempted to think either cooler isnt fitted well, or is defective. unless of course overheating, overstressed vrms can cause cpu to heat up too..? last option could be a dodgy chip of course.
his chip is running (stock) at 50C idle and 68 load, but its throttling the clockspeed when rendering. how do you run them at 74 degrees without issues? can you adjust the throttling temp?
yes you can adjust the throttle if you get the amd master (software) that controls the throttling but when I tried it it forced the cpu temp to 85-87 deg C and it was throttling down anyway (because it was overheating) I think better mobo is a best choice, but additionally I build two systems 2990wx and i9 9980xe, and I found that xe outperformed wx even under overclock (while xe was stock) in almost everycase. The benchmark renders are deceptive with amd wx, reason being is that there is some bug with windows and thread management with amd wx you can read about it here:
Nope, on this specific board when the VRMs get to near 120 degrees, system will restart on its own
Without any OC, your VRMs should be at like 105 to 115 degrees under full load, depending on how good is the airflow in your case.
With a bad chip, you will run into crashes not overheating issues. This CPU is soldered unlike most Intel CPUs
Overheating like this, it is either a bad cooler, bad thermal paste application…etc
Need to disable PBO in bios, again this Mobo is designed for Gen 1 Threadripper CPUs
He needs one of the boards I mentioned above
Specifically talking about Vray, this bug barely has any effect over the 2990wx performance. It is over 40% faster than the i9 9980XE (Both at stock speeds)
You are thermal throttling as well, this is the same CPU with the same AIO mentioned above
Overclocking to 3.8 GHz on all cores, running at 61 degrees C
Using V-ray’s benchmark, it is over 40% faster than the i9 9980xe
BUT they are in the server room with AC at 22-23°C.
