My jaw dropped on the floor when after installing PS CS4 Trial I read that there is no GPU functions support for XP x64! I had huge problems with Vista so I go back to Xp x64 just to now that I won’t be able to speed things up with new PS 4 ! THIS SUXS BADLY!!!
Did you try the registry hack for older GPU support on xp64? It works on one of my machines, but intermittently. Might work for you. The file came with the additional content d-loaded with CS4, it’s in with the optional plugins.

I have an 8800 and and 8600 and don’t think of them as “old” either It’s just what Adobe calls the hack “AllowOldGPUS_ON.reg”
This seems to be a pretty common complaint - hopefully they will do something about it with a patch etc.

I have gtx280 and server 2k8 x64 - photoshop works like a crap. Really. It slow and laggy. Dunno why…
Lotta people having this problem it seems. We found that undocking the window in Photoshop made a huge difference on one of our machines (one not so much, but it wasn’t having the same lag problem). There’s something on the Adobe help site about how the docked windows (they call it the Application Frame) use more RAM so it’s clearly doing something different when docked.
Might help, certainly works a ton better for us.

hey, be happy they are at least letting us XP x64 users install CS4. They initially said they wouldn’t give it any support at all.
I’ll be golden at home though. My vista setup is being more stable than my XP x64 work computer since Nvidia came out with new drivers and after SP1. It can be annoying at times, but it’s working pretty nice now. Too bad it’ll be forever till we get it at work. Adobe still says they aren’t really supporting XP x64. They are merely allowing us to use it. I’m sure we’ll still have the same burner issues with Encore as well.
I found out why cs4 lags - when in editing mode (we opened an image and trying to move it/scale it/etc.) driver goes to standart 2d mode or low power, which slows things down like hell. Even with 180.42…
Damn Stupid.
Thanks for sharing that info Paul. I’m not sure I understand what that means, but does that sound like something that can be addressed with a patch from Adobe, or a driver update for the vid cards?

In simple words: your videocard core/shader/memory clocks are divided by too in this low power mode, which makes from ur $500 card a calculator
You can look at your current cloks in rivatuner (goto guru3d).
I don’t know how that could be fixed - by software patches or on driver level… So stay tuned…
Ah thanks for explaining. What a pain in the arse that is though! Hopefully Adobe sorts it out - seems to be a lot of people complaining of this problem.

Using the registry mod the 64-Bit Photoshop version is running now on my xp64 with all the new features.
Dont forget to also enable your 3d hardware in the preferences of PS.
Its working very well now even with large files.
videocard: nvidia 8800 softmodded to quadro 4600
Just type this in a new txt file, name it .reg, and double click it:

Is the trial still available? The only thing I can find on Adobe.com is notification on when the trials will be available - November 2008.

My CS4 was really laggy on Vista 64, it was much slower than CS3…then I found the openGL option and have found that the performance is leaps and bounds ahead of CS3 now(on an 8800GTX). Seems that using the windowed trick has pushed the performace even a little further. I am currently getting a kick out of the dynamic zoom and pan. Been looking for an excuse to use the Content Aware Scaling, but havn’t found one yet.

hey tammo, I have a 8800 GT at home and a GTS at the office, but I haven’t succeeded in modding it to quadro. How did you do it? I haven’t tried the latest Rivatuners, since I thought they didn’t work from 78xx on.

I wouldnt really suggest softmodding cards. Tho it’s been a while since i last tried. But it’s a lot less stable and you never know if a specific problem is due to the modding, the driver or something else in the system.
