The flat and reflective areas really presented a rendering challenge. The edges disappeared! So, I used standard chrome and metal materials, but then modified them with a cartoon material to get the handy edge outline.

Thanks for the feedback. The presentation was also used (as it developed) for a case study in my ‘3D viz’ class, so the project got a lot of critiques!
The buttons were designed using the Microsoft Segoe UI font, which I loved and used for the entire presentation. Their size and shape was determined by the the case width and spacing, the depth by the folding of the wings, the amount of travel required for tactile feedback, and otherwise shaped to look cool to my eye.
As far as real world functionality, the goal was to look five years out and propose NEW ways of doing things. That can be challenging and/or impossible, so assumptions were made and many times I just went with what matched the overall aesthetic and looked cool.

I purposely left some GI setting a little low to speed up the workflow as well as give some texture in the shadows. The problem was that the geometry was so flat and shiny; it was really hard to get stuff to “POP!” The shadow noise added a little analog flavor and then I used a toon-material to outline the forms.
I probably would have cranked up the settings to the the max for stills… but the main focus was on the video. I noticed in videos that are fast-moving, the eye is a lot more forgiving… and I was pretty burned out after months of work… so it was mostly about getting it done!
