I am putting together a few workstations, all with Tyan motherboards. One type is a 1u rackmount, with a Tyan Thunder K8SD Pro board. The others are regular workstations with Tiger K8WE boards. So far I have tried 3 boards total, and I have not gotten ANY of them to post. It’s not the monitor, and I don’t think it’s the video, since one mobo has onboard video, and the other I am using a pci-x card. I made sure the memory is compatible and I really doubt there are 3 bad components in each of these computers all with the same problem.
I am about to lose it. I have put together my own computer before with very few problems, and this is just baffling me.
So I am just throwing this out for anybody else who has put together Tyan systems, and possibly encountered the similar problem. I have checked & double checked so many things, and yet I think there could be a simple explanation for this.
are the power supplies also in the recommended list of Tyan?
I first used an Enermax powersupply not listed by Tyan, and the system wouldn’t boot at all, then I switched to the listed Antec True550 EPS power supply and everything was fine.
I have the Antec Truepower 2.0 550w EPS. It should work, but I spoke to a guy at Tyan, and he said there had been some reported problems with that model.
But I am also using a power supply that came with my 1U orbit micro case and basically the same thing is happening.
If it turns out none of the power supplies I have work, I will be pissed! But better to find the solution than none at all. I guess I’ll order another ps and see what happens.
Not sure about those cases, but I’d imagine they have standoffs. Check to see if any of the pins are shorting the motherboard and remove them. They should only be on the holes.
Also make sure youve got ALL the additional power connectors on the board connected. There’s usually two.
JUJU, you are a HERO. And I officially feel like the biggest retard on earth. I wasn’t connecting the additional 6 pin power to the motherboard. I wonder how long it would have taken me to realize that…probably a long long time.
I’m amazed that power isn’t just simple power. I don’t know if it’s just Tyan, but you’d think there would be a way to be more compatible with the majority of power supplies. RAM is one thing, but electricity should be more standardized?..
For the time being though, my Antec 550w power supply is doing fine with the K8WE. I haven’t rendered anything on it yet, but so far so good. So far I have installed winxp 64, but thats it.
The guy at Tyan said the 400w supply might not be enough to power the other 1u rackmount I am putting together, but I think it will. He only said that because I told him I wasn’t getting post. My Boxx computer with similar specs takes less than 250w during 100% rendering and that is with a quadro card and also powering an lcd monitor (i use an APC battery backup and it tells me the wattage use).
Assembling computers is fun. If I hadn’t made such a stupid mistake with the power connectors, it would have been a piece of cake. There are advantages of ordering from companies like Boxx and Dell, but there are certainly advantages of building your own, especially if it’s something you enjoy doing. Before Juju saved me I was having some major regrets, but now it’s all good.
A lot of recent power consumption has been going to the PCI-E graphics cards - I think most of them require a separate molex directly to them. If you’re just using on-board graphics it should be fine.
im still getting a problem with my tyan motherboard where when i turn the system on i dont get a boot screen. i can hear the hard drives getting power. the mobo though seems messed u since even when i remove all ram it wont even beep.
Do you have BOTH power cables attached to the motherboard? :lol:
Does your board have onboard video? If it does there is a jumper that either enables or disables it. You could check that I suppose. The other things the Tyan tech guy suggested was to switch out the processors if it is a dual system, using only one at a time. And only leave 1 stick of memory in the first slot. You shouldn’t even need a HD to get the bios screen. All you should need is power to the board, and make sure the cpu fans are plugged in. That way it makes it a little easier to identify the problem.
I have a one of the Antec TruuPower TPII and am disappointed, my machine
shuts down when I try to burn CD’s/DvD’s, also it has to be routed
in a specific way or all the fans wont work. Ive been an Antec fan
(no pun intended) for a long time but this gives them a black eye.
The tech guy at Tyan also said there had been problems with the Antec True Power 2 550w. I built the two workstations with them and so far they have been rendering the whole weekend with no problems. Haven’t tried to burn a cd with them yet though. Sounds like enough people have had problems that it would be a good idea to steer clear of them.
This is the case/ps combo I bought. It appears there are couple different versions of the Truepower II 550w power supplies, so maybe this one does not have the same problems as the other.
I have had several Antecs and as a rule trust them but it looks like this
one model has some issues. As a matter of fact I have not idea who
to go with beyond Antec, always used them.
I’m a big FSP fan myself. Swapped to them after using antec for years, after I started learning about PSU’s. FSP doesn’t have a consumer lineup. Their consumer lineup is their old workstation/server psu’s.
