"universal settings" error

Hi!

Rendered an interior today with IRRmap + lightcache GI, qmc AA, and it looked fine. Then I tried (just for fun) to render it with Vlados universal settings instead just to see how much longer it would take/how much better it would look. The only thing I changed was the rendersettings, to qmc AA 1-100, adaptive amount 1.0, and noise threshold 0,001 etc.

But now the render is much darker than before, and has some colored splotches that wasnt there in the IRRmap+lightcache render.

Just to make sure, I changed the rendersettings back to IRRmap etc and it renders fine again.

I just thought this was abit strange… any idea why this happened??

I use lwf by the way… but I dont see how this would have any impact…

best regards
Kalle

Are you using a beta version? 1/.4545 or Throbs curve? Try applying Throb’s curve instead of 1/.4545.

Post some renders… with splotchs and without..

Could be a material problem..

yes, its a beta… 1.48.04 usually it works great, and Ive used vlados settings on some exteriors before with nice results…
1/.4545 never tried throbs curve… dont have time today but Ill give it a shot as soon as I can. But why would that make any difference??

here is an image showing parts of the different renders. hmm btw, I used “render region” for these… maybe the QMC+lightcache solution doesnt like that mode?? or maybe Im just guessing here? =)

ah forget about it! I used “store with irradience map” on nearly all of my lights… thats got to be it, right?

Ill make a quick test now…

Render region works fine for basically all modes.

And yeah that could very well be your problem

and, yes, it was  sorry bout that. works fine now…

thanks
Kalle

heheh s’ok no problems

Atleast its sorted

Well, now that it’s sorted, can you give us a report. What are the pros/cons of vlado’s universal method? Do you use it in production?

yup, Ive used the universal settings in production on a couple of exteriors with great results.
pros - extreamly easy to setup. You can switch between very fast test-renders and clean final renders by only changing a single setting (the noise threshold in the rQMC-settings rollout.
You also get very good details in shadowareas… And you will never get splotchy renders like you can get with low IRRmap settings… The only difference between a fast testrender and a final render will be the amount of noise.

cons - If you need noisefree renders it will take alot longer to render compared to using IRRmap-lightcache…

If you have some extra time for your renders, I think it would be a wise choice to use the universal settings… If you dont (i rarely do… always working with tight deadlines) then just render the old usual way…
