update 2 adaptive dome light square artifacts still not fixed

Interiors lit with single HDRI still produce square artifacts in latest update. Attached image rendered with GPU default setting sampled to 0.01 , attaching also Lighting and GI render elements. Sending scene archive to support…

Thanks a lot for the scene! Some fixes didn’t make it into the release and had to be delayed for the hotfix, but it’s good to have the scene to test. I will let you know when I confirm if everything is ok.

Best regards,
Vlado

Hi Peter,

I can’t find any ticket received yesterday related to this issue in our system, do you have a ticket number ? Did you use any file sharing service ?

I mailed directy to support@chaosgroup.com , no ticket yet. I also uploaded the file to you FTP , archive name PeterSanitraUpdate2_AdaptiveDome.zip , let me know if you can find the archive.

Thanks! Downloaded the file from the FTP, not sure why you don’t have the automatic reply from the ticketing, will check that out.

So this will be fixed properly for the hotfix, but in the meantime, the artifacts in the RGB channel will go away if you disable the “Max ray intensity” option in the Settings tab of the render setup dialog.

Best regards,
Vlado

Great,thank you!

hihi, this thread gave me a heart attack. ^^

My pleasure, I knew it would, LOL. I remember previous discussion about this issue, where you mentioned it can happen if there were so called “hacks” used, like no cast shadow on glass geo etc. But this scene does not have such a things, it`s regular double sided geo(boxes pretty much), and there are no custom object properties or vray properties on glass, material is also set to affect shadows. So knew this one might increase heartrate a little bit. :sunglasses:

Technically the “max ray intensity” option is a hack too… but I need to make it work

Best regards,
Vlado

What if the denoiser had a firefly removal option? AFAIK, Vray denoiser currently just blurs fireflies together with the nearby pixels instead of effectively detecting and removing them like Nvidia’s denoising algorithm. In this case the fireflies produced by disabled or very high Max Ray Intensity would be gone and Adaptive dome would work as expected? Just a guess, of course. BTW, Did Max Ray Intensity slow down renders? If my memory serves me right, the higher MRI is, the slower rendering is and setting it to a very low value gives a good render speed boost, but unfortunately, at the expense of darker rendering results. Correct me if I’m wrong, but disabling MRI is the physically correct way to render as it doesn’t limit the ray intensities? Of course, as I mentioned, drawback is fireflies and slower rendering.

A very useful hack.

Anyways, i tried to render with disabled “Max ray intensity” option, but i can still see the blocks in beauty/rgb, above sofa. It is more visible when viewing in linear instead of sRGB/OCIO. this region is 0.005 and 10000 samples.

I can give you my own NaN/Fireflies killer nuke node for free if you want.
It’s limited in that it won’t deal directly with lumps of fireflies, but it will work with successive applications.

Fireflies can often carry a lot of energy, and so “draw attention” from the sampler.
If you let a render run with unlimited max subdivs, those fireflies would theoretically converge into proper lighting, sooner or later.
At any noise threshold, however, they currently still require loads of samples and often end up “capping” max AA subdivs.
Whichever way you look at them, they are a veritable nuisance.
Hopefully things will improve for these soon enough.

MRI speeds renders up. But you are right it’s one less bias to have MRI off.
i can show you a glaring (ah-ah.) example.

I’m also getting the square artifacts with the latest version 4.20.00.0003. Disabling Max Ray Intensity didn’t help. Would you like me to send the scene?
