Update for the dome light

I’m in a situation where I want to use the dome light with a texture (exr), and need to rotate it around on a per shot basis. Rotating it sideways so it tilts works fine, but rotating it horizontally (its Z axis) has no effect. It seems one has to do this from the map controls (in this case “U offset”, and with the vrayHDR; the “horizontal rotation” spinner).
So basically what I need is to be able to rotate it in all directions.
In addition to this, a really wonderful feature would be a check box or similar in the modify panel to enable the texture map assigned to show in the view port, allowing for more intuitive feedback while rotating it to its desired orientation.

Is this wishful thinking on my part, or doable?

seconded.
Imo there is some room for improvement for sure. About rotation, I think you could wire the rotation from the map controls to the rotation of your dome light…would that work?

wiring could work, but converting rotation into a map offset is beyond my puny artist brain

It’s easier when using the vrayhdr map, as it has a rotation value in degrees, but since exr’s have to be loaded through the max bitmap thing, I’m stuck.

Maybe the Vrayhdr could support the exr fromat as well in the future?

well the max bitmap’s offset field is 0-1 meaning 0-360 degrees. So the wiring conversion would be rotation/360

But agree on the wish

completely agree with a preview - this would be really handy.

its very strange, i bumped to this today…ive ogt interior lit with hdri mapped dome light…turniing the dome light around Z axis doesnt change a damn thing…hows that possible?..and i have strange feeling am getting this with the horizontal rotation spinner too…it definitely worked in max 9 and SP3 vray…am at max2010 now with SP3a and it doesnt work…really mad…any thought what can be wrong?

Nope, it has never worked. The orientation of the texture itself does not depend on the orientation of the dome light.

ok…but in my case…it seems that even rotating the HDRI within the map itself (vrayhdri mat - horizontal rotation) is not working :frowning:
