V-Ray GPU (RTX) IPR crash with Phoenix FD in Camera view

I am experiencing a reproducible 3ds Max crash when running V-Ray GPU IPR in RTX mode with a Phoenix FD simulation. The crash occurs specifically when rendering from a Camera V-Ray.

Observations & Troubleshooting:

  • Camera View Crash: Starting IPR from any Camera view causes 3ds Max to crash to the desktop.

  • Motion Blur Ruled Out: I initially suspected motion blur was the cause, but disabling it completely in the camera settings did not resolve the issue.

  • Perspective View Workaround: If I switch the active viewport to Perspective mode, the IPR renders perfectly fine and does not crash.

Technical Details:

  • Hardware: Intel Core i7-14700KF, Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070

  • Crash Module: cuMemcpyHtoDAsync_v2 failure in nvcuda64.dll (Access Violation) during OptiX BVH update.

  • Version V-Ray: 7.4 DR2. Phoenix FD: 5.25.00.

  • Driver nvidia: 610.62 as recommended by V-Ray.

Hi,

Thank you for all the details.

I was able to reproduce the issue on my side.
We will investigate it further and provide an update.

Hi Max,

The crash seems to be related to the Phoenix expressions and particle tuner.
Removing them resolves the issue: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1OL0h1ztaonbgBYU_zNw6aiTqqPDQCOTg/view?usp=drivesdk

Unfortunately, because Phoenix is now end-of-support,
we are unable to provide bug fixes for it.
