V-Ray Material and Opacity Maps?

Does the Opacity Map slot in the V-Ray material work in the same way as the Opacity Map slot in scanline?

I have a 3D model of an island that is planar mapped from the top down. The 32bit TGA that is assigned to the diffuse and opacity map slots in the V-Ray material has a very straight forward alpha…100% white where the island is and then fading to 100% black at the edges.

The result I get when I render is that the entire island appears mapped at what looks like something like 50% opacity.

Thanks!

Yeah it should work pretty similar.

If the whole island is rendering as 50% opacity all over that sounds like a mapping problem to me.

Maybe try the same maps on something like a plane to see if they render properly there.

DaForce,

Thanks for the info. I’ll dig into this further as I’m sure I’ve got something screwed up.

Thanks again.

Heheh no problem.

I just tested out a plane with lots of subs and a noise mod and some map with an opactiy map and it rendered how it should.
So I imagine your mapping is a little bit screwy.

Just to confirm, I did screw it up. I missed the ‘Mono Channel Output’ setting in the opacity map. Once properly to alpha rather than RGB, things rendered as they should.

Thanks!

Sweet… good to hear. (that you fixed it, that is)
