I have two computers running max and Vray. One is fine. The other computer will grind to a halt upon opening the material editor. I get the spinning blue wheel and cannot do anything for minutes at a time. The task manager does not show any intensive processing, so I really don’t know what’s going on.
I’m writing here as opposed to some general max forum because the problem only seems to happen when there are vray materials already loaded in the material editor. If we are working with standard materials then the freeze does not occur.
As I mentioned, this only happens on one computer, so it’s not necessarily a problem with vray itself, but it does seem that the vray materials are putting some type of demand on the system which is causing this freeze. Could it be licensing issue? Maybe having trouble locating a license across the network (or internet -- which is my alternate server)?
I do not have a long list of network paths for my bitmaps in case you’re wondering.
Has anyone seen this behavior before and does anyone know how I might fix it?
It happens to me too.
It might be about the high-reso textures.
Is it possible to make Vray use lower reso textures for the material editor? Can there be such setting?
And if I am not mistake Vray reads settings for material editor from the original render settings and if there are high settings, those thumbnails take so long time to render. Maybe there can be a solution for this as well ?
No, it doesn’t. The material editor rendering uses its own settings independent of the main rendering settings.
Could it be licensing issue? Maybe having trouble locating a license across the network (or internet -- which is my alternate server)? If it was licensing then it would happen with standard materials too, since they are also rendered with V-Ray when it is selected as the material editor renderer.
Textures might be a problem - I guess the easiest way to check this is to see if it happens if the textures are stored locally. Other than that, if you feel like it, next time you get this to happen and if you are on Windows 7, go to the task manager, right-click on the 3dsmax.exe process > Create dump file; and zip and send me the resulting .dmp file. It will say exactly what 3ds Max or V-Ray is doing at that time.
I get this when first loading a scene with an HDRI texture loaded in the material editor. Its trying to load over 100mb for this one map so I figure it’s just something I have to put up with…
This happens to me all the time, and with the Slate editor too. I find the worst is accessing material libraries. It can literally take 5 minutes or more just to open one up. I usually set it to display text only, which definitely helps, but it can take a few minutes to even make the UI respond enough to set a newly opened library to ‘text only’.
Vlado: I will send you an example .dmp file shortly.
My problem turned out to be licensing. The ip address had changed for my license server and I didn’t realize it. I never suspected that was the reason because Vray was still working -- just very slowly.
I hope you others can solve your other slow-down issues.
You could try to turn on “filter selected objects only” (right click into your "Scene Materials Tab).
I think otherwise it will rerender all the materials everytime you open the Material Editor.
Maybe that helps ?
