Xp all the way.
I am taking vista off my new Dell laptop because it is so bloated and memory hungry.
On my render nodes that have 2gb they get by just fine rendering my images. The dell with vista installed just chokes and say that it has run out of memory even before it starts rendering.
I hate vista now, I really gave it a chance, but I am done with it. Its just not pretty enough to put up with the stress.
XP64 is the best choice.
2nd xp64.
XP
64 or 32 bit version of Vista ? More than 8 gigs ram?
Hi Jonas…

My GF’s new lappy has Vista on it. I might end up taking it off if it becomes a problem. Just not sure if the drivers will be available for it.
i think i’ll gave vista a little chance cause haven’t any money anymore for xp at the moment. max only starts by right click icon and say “start with admin rights”. but i’am admin… when i dubble click an error occurs…
From memory, I think I had to turn off something called User Account Control to get Max to work on Vista.
It warns you that what you’re doing is a bad idea and that the polar ice caps will melt if you continue but it makes Max work.

Using 3dsmax 9 with sp2 or extension 1rev3, helps. We had no need to set the “run as administrator”. 3dsmax8 requires the “run as administrator” (set in the properties) or disabling the uac.
But after everything is running there are some problems in the file dialog, clicking in a file when saving and then change the name doesn’t seem to work and he always assume the file we clicked (better try since my explanation isn’t that good). Also when using the asset tracking and setting the paths we must add an extra “\” in the file dialog or max sets the path to the directory just one level below. I think max is only going to work perfectly with vista in max 10 (or may not).
Best regards,
Daniel
WTF… vista s… 2 days i’am try’n to install max now. seems that the prod. booster dond’t like vista, or other way round. always i install i get error.. to be continou’d…
Uninstall Vista…
Smash the disk in with a hammer…
Install xp64…
Enjoy greater karma.
i will…
Do you want DirectX 10 ? if no, install XP or XP64 ![]()
The Vista sp1 is in beta test, wait and see
hmm, argument! 1:0 ![]()
max with sp2 runs now…
dx10 will be working in xp eventually.
it has nothing the latest openGL cant do anyway.
So this time next year, we will all be using unix based OS systems. It would be interesting to do a poll in a years time or so and see if any of us have jumped to vista bandwagon.
God I hope so… I can’t wait for VRay standalone for OSX and 3DSMax… I’ll be able to quadruple my renderfarm ![]()
And if Max ever goes OSX, kiss MS goodbye in my office.
I can see max ever going to OSX.. and if it would.. what would the advantage be? 95% of the problems people have are with MAX or Vray itself not windows.
Plus up until the last year or so, OSX hasnt even had proper 64bit support (im not even sure if it still does), that alone with its poor poor opengl drivers and lack of directx would mean a very slow max viewport anyway.
You all seem to be bashing vista a fair bit, but dont forget just how crap XP was and not to mention OSX.. geez it was BAD when it first came out.
Time will tell lads.. time will tell ![]()
