Visual wobble / distortion in VR

Hi All

We are running Enscape 2.5 for SketchUp (2018) on a very grunty workstation with an RTX 2080. We are also using a Vive Pro. Drivers all up-to-date.

When we ramp up the quality slider to high or ultra, we are noticing quite strong distortion when using VR. While it affects the main view, it is most noticable on the laser pointer and menu system - particularly when chaging time of day. Basically the straight edges on the menu/laser go all wobbly and distorted, there seems to be some connection to movement because when we move the menu controller up and down, the wobble/distortion goes in the opposite direction to movement.

I’m not sure if i can record the issue or not - screenshots don’t pick up the menu from what i could see.

The issue is much more pronouced in standalone file, but still present in live SketchUp view.

The model is quite chunky with alot of trees and plants, but not crazy. SkP is about 250mb, EXE comes out at 120mb

Just wondering whether any other users have had similar issues.

Many thanks 8)

Corey

Hi @coreym and welcome to our forums!

We’ve indeed had similar reports - in most cases this was due to an unfortunate default setting in SteamVR that sets the rendering resolution to 200% for high performance gpus, please see this page in our knowledge base for more details:

https://enscape3d.com/knowledgebase/using-virtual-reality-headset/#vive

Other than that it’s still not unlikely, that the performance on Ultra quality doesn’t reach a completely smooth level in VR depending on the scene complexity, as it involves very demanding lighting calculations, which are usually not done in VR applications in real-time. We still think it’s a useful feature in some scenarios, for example to get a better impression of the overall lighting mood in a scene, when there’s not necessarily a lot of (fast) movement involved.

Hope that helps!

Hi Clemens

Thanks for your reply and welcome.

That is interesting to know about the Steam video setting, mine was set to 159% which is quite odd.

Enscape does such a great job dealing with lots of geometry/reflections etc so really happy there, and like you say - there is always going to be an upper limit on on much stuff you can pump in.

Cheers
