Vray 2.0 - Vray RT problems

Hi there,

Ive just installed the latest beta of vray 2.0 and have some problems when using VrayRT GPU. As the image renders, blue blocks appear over the screen and change in colour. Also the colours are strange for the entire image. It works fine in CPU mode.

I have a gtx480 graphics card.

It was working fine in 3dsmax 2010 when using just vray1.5 sp5 and vrayRT GPU.

Any ideas ?

Does this happen on any scene? Can you show an image of how it looks. There aren’t any major changes between the two versions.

Best regards,
Vlado

Actually I can reproduce the issue here; will be fixed in Beta 3 - thanks for the pointer!

Best regards,
Vlado

Ive attached an image to show you what is happening today. I just have a blank yellow screen now when using GPU. CPU is rendering fine still. This is occuring when using max 2011.

This is max 2011 - just a yellow screen

This is max 2010, the same problem I was getting on max 2011 last night.

As I said, when I had vray 1.5 sp5 and the latest beta of VrayRT GPU, it worked fine.

Yep, thanks for the images! Will be fixed for Beta 3.

Vlado

Sorry, I got your message after I posted them  When is beta 3 going to be available ?

It is available already from our site.

Vlado

Great. Thanks a lot.

Vlado. Im still having problems with this. I have updated to the latest Vray2.0 build which I assume updates RT as well. I still have different coloured buckets. Im using an entirely different scene.

Does it still involve the car paint material?

Best regards,
Vlado

No, a completely different scene with no car paint material used.

This is part of the RT window.

Ok; which engine is this? GPU, CPU? One machine or many machines with DR?

Best regards,
Vlado

This is the GPU openCL engine. I have 2 480 GTX cards that are not in SLI mode. No other machines are being used. DR not used.

Do you get any errors in V-Ray render server window? What is the memory usage on your GPUs?

Best regards,
Vlado

Just checked the server window.

Memory usage: 111.94mb

Error CL_MEM_OBJECT_ALLOCATION_FAILURE (-4) at line 1716, in file ./src/ocl_tracedevice.cpp !!!

Thats the only error.

Ok then, you are running out of GPU memory on one of the GPUs (most likely the one also used as primary display adapter). Unfortunately V-Ray RT does not print the total GPU memory usage (it doesn’t know it) - the number that you see is for the CPU only and does not include the entire scene, but you can monitor this using tools like EVGA precision, which will also include GPU memory used by other programs, including Windows.

Best regards,
Vlado

ok. so would that mean I just reduce GPU texture size ?

If you are using Windows 7/Vista you can also turn off the Aero theme, which will free more RAM on the display GPU. Reducing the texture size, and/or the ray bundle size/rays per pixel may also help.

Best regards,
Vlado

Ok, will try those out. Thanks.

Right. Ive still got problems with VrayRT. I tried a number of things last night. I went back to the older 258.96 drivers as I read people had had better success with them but to no avail. Im getting the error message that I got before, but the thing is that my scene is mainly geometry (albeit a lot of it) and hardly any textures. I also tried in SLI mode with the older drivers and it actually worked but was very slow to update and my whole system slowed down to an almost non usable state. So im really not sure what to do. I find it hard to believe that a scene where I have mainly geometry cant work with 2 gts480’s that have 2gb each.

Any ideas ? I can send the scene across if you need me to.
