Thanks for shipping!!
Unfortunately I can not test it, it always crashes on start up.
I run the latest Rhino 5 64Bit & Visual Arq.
Uninstalled and rolled back to 3.4.
When will Vray work with Rhino 6.0 by the way?
Our support will contact you asap. We have internal builds of Rhino 6 support. It will be supported in the next service pack of V-Ray in about a month or so.

Hi Pretty Picture Girl,
Can you give us some more information on your issue with 3.6 ?
Do you see any messages that indicate the cause of the crash?
If not, we can arrange a TeamViewer session so that we can investigate further on your system.
Thank you for letting us know about this problem.
Regards,
Konstantin
Hi Konstantin,
I mailed the details already to sales.software@chaosgroup.com.
Regarding team viewer unfortunately this is not an option, as I have no license for it and will not purchase one (way overpriced!).
Using the free version for anything business related (which talking about my business software Vray surely is) is not permissible.
If you want you can Skype me though.
The machine is an HP Z800 with 24GB Ram.
The previous version of Vray ran flawlessly.
Here what ran without issues:

Following directly after the new installation I did a restart. Once I start Rhino it crashes & sends an automatic error log to McNeel.
They already confirmed that its Vray related and that they inform you about this:
āā¦It appears the crash happened in a plug-in called Vray. I have forwarded the crash information to the developers of Vray. Thank you for helping us improve Rhino. Best Regards, Tim Hemmelman Rhinoceros Development Robert McNeel & Associates Ref ID: 0f3ddf79-b5db-4aaf-9bf3-b6f48ddf0261ā¦ā

Hello,
We were able to reproduce the problem and our Dev team just found a solution. The fix will be available soon! Please stand by.
Kind regards,
Peter
Sounds like bad news. A R6 version per next SR only? I hope we get the chance of a second SR after the Rhino 6 version is released ⦠.
(In the past the R6 version was available as the R5 version was ready ⦠good old nightly beta times.)
@Pretty_Picture_Girl , please go to https://download.chaosgroup.com/ , download V-Ray 3.6 for Rhino once again (the build is updated), install it, and let us know if this resolves your problem.
Kind regards,
Peter
Glad to hear your compatibility issue is gone.
Regarding the opacity map problem - this is an issue when using a single Diffuse layer with its option āDiffuse Map Alpha as Transparencyā enabled. It should be fine on CPU, but no transparency achieved on GPU CUDA. This is a known limitation and is due to the outdated material structure (using single BRDFDiffuse, BRDFRefraction, etc. layers).
If you use a V-Ray BRDF layer instead, place the texture in its Diffuse slot and then enable Opacityās āDiffuse Texture Alphaā you will be able to render the material properly on GPU as well as CPU.
Kind regards,
Peter
Thanks so much Peter. Iāll try that. Still it will be painful changing old materials now.
Have a fine weekend.
There is only so much we can do to keep supporting outdated material structure without inhibiting the advancement of V-Ray technology. You will still be able to render perfectly fine on CPU, but the newer GPU CUDA renderer will not support a solution for this particular problem out of the box (and thus my suggestion for recreating the material manually).
Please let us know if you have any other issues with the new update or simply how you find working with it.
Have a nice weekend,
Peter
Hi Peter,
tried what you suggested. Despite having to change materials I have to say itās a much faster way to create decals this way. So, great suggestion. Thanks.
Next step for me, try volumetric underwater lights ![]()
As my colleague has already mentioned in your email correspondence, the issue you have encountered is due to insufficient GPU memory.
To resolve this, simply open the V-Ray Asset Editor Settingsā right panel > Raytrace (advanced view) > GPU Textures and choose either āOn-demand mipmappingā or āResize texturesā.
If you would like to see how you machine fares in comparison with those of other V-Ray users, visit V-Ray Benchmark ā test your CPU/GPU rendering power | Chaos .
Kind regards,
Peter
Hi Peter,
thanks, I tried that. The issue persists.
When I run a rendering I still get the same error message. mIght be also the Nvidia settings. Unfortunately Vray/Rhino is not listed in their settings list.
So for now I use the 3D Visualisation App Profile with:
-Open GL Overlay switched on
-Power management to Max
-Tripple buffering on
-Vertical sync on
Can you suggest which settings best to choose here? At the Nvidia forum I get suggestions to go to the Vray forum. Here I might get the opposite recommendation.
I plan to upgrade to a Nvidia Quadro M5000 in a few days. Hope that helps, itās the fastest card I can put into the machine without upgrading the power pack as well.
Honestly I am not so interested to know how my machine fairs against others. All I want to know is, will the graphic card upgrade solve this specific issue or not.
If yes I will upgrade, if no I will not. A simple answer would be all I want on this.
The new card has 8GB dedicated memory, the old has 2.5GB.
Kind regards Pretty
You could observe the GPU memory usage with an utility like GPUz. I suppose so 2.5GB is to limited. I would look at the benchmarks, my impression was that the GTX series should give you a lot of power for your money. But I donāt know so much about mobile GPU.
Hi Micha,
thanks, yes I can see the GPU use in the Nvidia control panel. It says GPU utilisation is marginal when rendering with GPU&CPU in parallel via CUDA, but task manager also indicates that the 2.5GB GPU memory is fully used when doing so.
This seems contradictory to me.
Btw, the Quadro 5000 (which I have right now) and Quadro M5000 (which I am planning on getting) are both workstation cards the Hewlett Pachard P Z800 is not a Laptop. The mobile Quadro would be the 5000M not the M5000.
So far I was under the impression that the Quadro cards are better geared to rendering large still images and using very large files in Photoshop. Iām not doing any games on my computer, only CAD & Graphics and rendering.
Do you have experience using an GTX for that or should I stick with a Quadro?
I do not mind the way it displays on screen, but I do want nice results in the finished images, especially when printing them.
Thanks,
Pretty
OK, I understand. I used a quadro card in the past but there was no big advantage for Rhino. So, finally I bought a GTX1080ti. Also I donāt play games, only CAD and rendering.
I looked at some benchmarks and if Iām not totally wrong than you get more more speed and more memory per GTX1080(ti) (for much less money).
The difference is so high, that Iām not sure ⦠. Looks like you could buy three GTX1080ti.
Great info Micha,
look what I found:
That suports your comments and answers my question on best settings. At least with regards to Rhino.
Instead of the Quadro M5000 (=1290?) I could even get a Titan Xp (1299?).
Maybe overkill for my current machine, but I could still get it and than use it in the next machine as well.
Thanks for your comments.
I read a german review and the conclusion was - GTX1080ti is nearly 50% of the price and 95% of the calculation power of the Titan Xp. So, I would buy two GTX1080ti for the money. Only one card more and you get half render times. ![]()
Great! Thanks for the info. That will be my route then!
