Vray 7.2 Slow Compact Material Editor

After I upgraded to 7.2, the compact material editor is extremely slow to populate the material previews. Is anyone else having this issue? Even hitting reset materials, it takes well over a minute to several minutes to populate with just basic empty vray materials. Is there a setting that may have changed or turned on with 7.2 that could slow this down? This is using Max 2024.2 Update.

Same issue here, happens with Max 2025 and 2026 on any file I open. The previews are slow to load, and any changes made to the material properties are really slow to update.

Yes, same here…the slowness is killing me. 3dsamx 2025, vray 7.2

Hi guys, we will need more information. There might be multiple reasons, including issues with the licenses.

I’ll create a support ticket to help focus the issue. But essentially, it takes anywhere from 30 seconds per material ball to populate the compact material editor. When I’m finally in the material, clicking on a bitmap is also extremely slow. However, it is running faster today but I’m also in the morning hours to many people at our firm may not be online yet. So, if licenses are part of the issue, that could be a sign.

Resetting the material editor slots can take 1 second or longer for each material…before vray 7.2 it takes less than a second to reset all 24 slots. I’ll post more info soon.

Rolling back to 7.1 eliminated the slowdown. This behavior only happens with 7.2.

I have got the same with slate material editor, 3dsmax 2022. Rolling back to 7.1 as it is impossible to work.

Just mentioning. We are looking into it. Every detail that you could share about the behavior is appreciated. Thank you.

Does it happen if the “3ds Max material swatches” (Render Setup > Settings > System) are active?

Yes, I have tried it too, no difference.

This is happening to everyone in my office, but with the Slate Editor as well. The slowdown seems to be on rendering material previews now taking much longer than they used to. We tend to work in the Slate with the scene materials area set to “Filter Selected Objects”. If I ever do a select all I’ve now condemned myself to Max locking up for minutes. It wasn’t like this in 7.1! Or ever before, for that matter.

Just adding that I’m also seeing this after updating to V-Ray 7 Update 2 Hotfix 1 in 3ds Max 2026. Material previews take forever to update in the Slate editor. It seems to progressively get worse the longer I am in a file. As soon as I open the file, everything runs like it used to in 7.1. As I do more material work, it slows down to where the RenderQueue in the bottom left of the Slate editor can take minutes to finish. This really slows things down as just changing a setting in a material like the reflection or glossiness can take up to a minute to update the thumbnail.

Hi everyone. We would appreciate it if you could send a ticket to the support we might require from you to install a special build, which would help us identify the problem. Thank you in advance.
This particular issue was not fixed in V-Ray 7 Update 2 HF1.

Ticket submitted. Please fix this as soon as you can! It’s one of those bugs that makes V-Ray nearly unusable. Thank-you

Waw I thought I was spared from this issue, but I guess I’m not. Please fix asap.

Hello,

There’s a possible fix in today’s stable nightly build 33251 (Chaos).
Could you try it and see if there’s improvement ?

Best regards,
Yavor

Just tried the nightly and that does seem to be a lot better - thanks!

The test build that I ran after working on my support ticket did seem to fix the issue for me. I’ll give the new nightly build a try once IT gets in and gives me admin access haha.

Edit: Confirmed that nightly build 33251 is running like it is supposed to. No slow down in the Slate material editor.
