vray and corona

idk if its just me but somehow setting up scenes and even the white balance seems more natural in corona? in vray out of the box with the same camera and white balance settings there is a difference in how natural the images look, corona has a more real life appearance and the lighting is alot more subtle will try to post some shots later to compare, Does anyone here seem also use corona?

Under the same lighting conditions and the same materials, both renderers generally produce the same or very similar renders - I know this because I’ve checked it many times.

i had an override material in both situations, so no materials were being used but a 128 grey but there is something to it, i need to find the time to test it and post it. and in both cases the vray sun and corona sun since its an interior

The sun and sky might generally have slightly different implementations, even if they are based on the same Hosek paper. Should be close enough though, at least from my tests.

ok, i will try to test and see, i have also heard this from a few people i know who also use corona so i can only set aside a few hours using the same scene to run the tests and post some images, sorry if am upsetting any fans of vray or corona but idk i just have to see, with corona and vray now being the two top dogs and everyone grabbing a copy of both its worth a few hours of testing for myself that is

You are only upsetting me I guess  All in all, render engines work based off the same rendering equation… there is not much room for custom interpretation. Given the same input, they will generally produce the same output. Anyways, I’ll post some tests of my own…

yeah, lets test and post

I’ll speak strictly imho, but anyone who comes stating things like this without bringing hard evidence with examples demonstrating clear differences and also underlining why another renderer does it better, is really just throwing things out there into the fire to be burned…mitviz, if you really want true resolve with what you mentioned, you should do a bit more research and present something for the developer to compare and test with.

will do! i plan to run some tests on the same scene and same setups to see once and for all, am also on my side hearing the comments too often to i need to try it all at the same time, raw render for raw render, see how they stack up

Here are two very quick 10 minute tests; grey materials, respective sun and sky systems. As you can see, there are some minor differences (the sky is slightly different), but overall, quite close.

very close indeed, i was just about to setup a scene myself, will post

some findings

very similar indeed, will continue testing with same scene with materials etc

am being picky but am wondering if these minute differences in the images are what changes the game later on, complete armatures and first time users are turning out really fantastic stuff on the corona forums the likes of which only few users here are able to reproduce based on the images i see being posted but also many vray users don’t bother to post anymore either, so is the case for two studios i know and the guys that work there, so maybe this is why, well in anycase ama keep testing things out

Not really.

complete armatures and first time users are turning out really fantastic stuff on the corona forumsThere’s plenty of crappy stuff on the Corona forum as well. In any case, our forums are mostly support forums - people mostly come here when they have problems or questions. If you are looking for actual work done with V-Ray, sites like Behance, vrayworld.com and Evermotion have plenty of examples.

need to visit those sites more, see what others are up to:)

This has been discussed many times before. Vray like any other renderer is just a tool, its up to the artist to utilize it. Its all about how to get there easier/faster. In terms of flexibility I think vray is one of the most mature render engines out there. While corona can do interior/exterior renderings, there will be a lot of short comings, when it comes to things like particles, fx, pass ids etc. The only real way to get all of those features implemented is to have the renderer being worked on for many years getting user’s feedback and building tools based of of that.

Imho it terms of light transport (the look of gi/lighting) vray does pretty well and other engines do compare (like Vlado already posted). I think the beauty of images actually comes more from textures and shaders, then the lighting (light is also important of course).

if you look at any of your favorite images you will see the amount of texture detail is enormous, which most generic renders lack because it also takes a lot of time to create/set them up. And a final touch of course in post, adding that nice effect of volumetrics, depth, noise, abberation etc all the natural effects from camera ultimately make the image look great.

My two cents.

V-Ray 3X has been, for me, a game changer. Now, I don’t need to mess with V-Ray seetings, at all. The only thing I change is the dynamic memory (would be nice if that was automated like in Solid Rocks), and I change progressive to adaptive. I was contemplating going Corona, however, V-Ray 3X convinced me to stay.

Here are some renders with materials; these are a bit more ambiguous.

First are two renders with min ray intensity disabled in V-Ray and min sample intensity set to 0.0 in Corona; apart from the different reflections and slight color tone differences, the two renders are quite close. These should be considered “correct” images as MRI/MSI are biased controls and enabling them can change the result quite a bit, as you will see below.

Next are two renders with min ray intensity set to 20.0 in V-Ray and min sample intensity set to 20.0 in Corona; these are the default values for both engines. Note that in V-Ray, enabling MRI kills the fireflies but keeps the image mostly the same. On the other hand, in Corona, MSI does kill the fireflies, but all alters the image brightness and color tone quite a bit as well.

All images rendered for the same amount of time.

the floor reflection looks a bit strange on the left image, is that corona?

The reflection models are different; the V-Ray ones are Blinn, I’m not sure what they ended up in Corona, probably GGX.

Left images are V-Ray, right are Corona.
