vray doesn't render the rhino materials

Hi there!

Me again…

I’ve got the following problem. I’m using the software speedtree for creating trees which I can directly export into the .3dm file format. When I open the file in the renderview mode it looks perfect, with all the textures a the right place. The textures are all shown in the Rhino material editor. When I render it with the Rhino Renderer everything works fine. But when I want to render it with vray, the materials are completely gone. So I need to find a way how vray either also reads the rhino materials/ textures or how I can export a Rhino material to a vray material.

Any suggestions, please?

I don’t know much about it, but have you tried re applying the materials after the objects are imported into rhino? Also try checking the path of each image applied as a texture map and see if it linked it ok. Hopefully someone that knows what they are doing will chime in here.

Thanks Dana but this is not the problem. I think it’s a general issue how to deal with the integration of rhino materials into vray.

Someone else any idea?

Toni

Hi,

Can you post an example scene file to test and see your materials setup?

Of course. Here is the sample file. I’ve already tested if it might have to do with the maps being .tga files but this doesn’t seem to matter.

Tree2.zip

Would be great if anyone could help…

Hi Toni,

I have made new V-Ray materials for the “Tree” and i think the scene now renders fine.

It seems that Rhino transparency doesn’t work with V-Ray and we will make a note about it.

Here is the scene file with all textures (have converted them to PNG), probably you will have to correct the paths in your environment:

Hi
V-Ray get confuse because the whole tree is a group. If you un-group the tree you will be able to render the Rhino materials. V-Ray should be able to render the Rhino material. We are going to have problem with the alpha transparency object, but you will be fine with the basic Rhino material. Notice in my example that the rhino materials are rendering fine with the exception of the small branch materials that has a alpha transparency image. In that case you will have to make a V-Ray material.
Although we can use Rhino materials, I recommend you use the V-Ray material, because they are optimize to work with V-Ray.

I know the problem of rhino materials and mapped transparency. Architecture scenes can be full of plants and trees and creating Vray materials is cumbersome and waste the VfR material editor. I hope an easy way can be found, so that Rhino materials can be used like the Rhino viewport shows the objects.

I suppose so your textures are using integrated alpha informations, so “use color texture as transparency” is needed for Rhino materials only (could be internal enabled always). Simple solution without any new option, very helpful for any exterior arch viz.

So, VfR would could ignore the Rhino material alpha maps and avoid problems of wrong transparency (alpha vs. transparency mapping) and the rendering would get the right look. Would be a big step forward. I hope it’s quick implemented.

Hi Micha
I think that what you said may work. Can you report this on fogbugz?

It’s case 8233 now.

Thanks you Micha

Hi Guys
Joe introduced a fix for this issue. The fix will be available in the next release. Here is a render using only default Rhino materials. Notice that even in the Rhino viewport I get the correct appearance.

Great, that is it.

Thank you!!!

Couldn’t the separate alpha map be supported to please? We have the situation, that Vray supports the alpha of textures and the Rhino display the separate alpha map only? My hope is, that Rhino and Vray support both methods. Please, one internal set flag more, one for the Rhino alpha map “invert”, please.

Hi Micha
Please, send a request ticket. Include the scene and more information for the programmers.

Joe implement the Rhino material transparency map support at the last nightly build.
