Vray for Blender 5.1 ?

Greetings,

When will get support for Blender 5.1 ?

regards

Hi lh3d,

We’re working on this, but we can’t share a timeframe right now.

My estimation is the end of May beginning of June, but as always keep in mind that delays happens for many reasons.
Hope this helps!

When V-Ray added support for 5.1, Blender 5.2 was right around the corner.

That’s possible, but this issue isn’t necessarily related to V-Ray, it’s pretty much the same with all external rendering engines. That’s the main disadvantage for anyone who doesn’t use the standard tools.

And Chaos is doing a really good job integrating the V-Ray renderer into Blender; personally, I haven’t really had any issues, and it’s integrated pretty well into the software.

I prefer that to having a totally buggy alpha/beta version that works on the latest version of Blender but crashes sometimes, especially for production work.

1. I’m a bit confused, I saw a comment saying “When V-Ray added support for 5.1 …”, so is 5.1 already supported? In which case, is there a difference between the Community edition and the paid version? (I only see 4.4, 4.5 and 5.0 available for download - I am on the community edition, was just excited to learn V-Ray, when i discovered I can’t - downgrading Blender is not an option).

2. Regarding compatibility… Normally, I would expect 5.0 to actually mean/be 5.x, and usually only have breaking changes between major versions (5 → 6). Is this an exception (hopefully), to have breaking changes in Blender from one minor version to another? Or should we expect this all the time (5.1 → 5.2, 5.2 → 5.3 etc)? That would be really frustrating… For the users that have to wait, but also for Chaos developers I’d imagine. I hope this is just a rare case/exception from Blender folks

Hi @marian_stoica,

let me answer your questions as much as I can.

  1. The comment you saw most probably refers to internal builds or this is somebody that already has access to builds for Blender 5.1 because we gave them a build to test out with disclaimer that it’s still work in progress and issues are expected of course.

  2. Breaking changes in Blender are made between 5.x to 5.x versions, meaning that from 5.1 to 5.2 there are breaking changes and we need to adapt V-Ray. This is why we consider 5.x versions major and 5.x.x versions minor. With the minor versions there are almost none breaking changes and usually any 5.x build of V-Ray would work with 5.x.x with no major issues.

Also we’re exploring ways to expose unreleased officially V-Ray builds for Blender versions that support newer Blender to anyone who wants to try them out as soon as we think they’re stable enough for the user to work on them which will hopefully make things easy.

Looks like some auto correcting happened and some of my words including the month name were messed up. I corrected my answer, and to clarify I meant June not July, hopefully it makes more sense now. Apologies about that.
