I wonder if V-Ray’s development for Blender has been cancelled. Look, I check the nightlies almost every day, and there are always updates for Maya, Max, and C4D almost daily; months go by and there isn’t a single fix for Blender.
The Blender forums also don’t seem to be addressed by the developers or other staff members. I wonder if V-Ray for Blender is a subproduct or a lower-tier product.
If it’s the latter, I’d suggest raising the price so it gets treated like the rest of the programs.
I don’t know.
What does everyone think?
I share the same interest in having more updates, especially some related to some things that usually bothers or require a workaround (like Toon + curves rendering bug; Viewport x VFB color difference; incomplete docummentation (compared to other dccs like Maya/3Dsmax - e.g. how to back to beauty; support to View Layers, geo nodes etc. etc.). A more frequent release in the nightlies would certainly be very welcome!
On the other hand, I had a good experience with feedback on my posts, usually with answers from @bozhidar_ivanov. A few of my posts are dead without continuing a discussion, but I’ll revive them pinging someone in the future.
One thing I really miss is a reoadmap and a place to see/check what is being developed. As a blender user from a long time and active follower of the Blender updates and news, it is really really great to know what is being developed and what and when to expect the releases. I never found something like this for VRay.
Does anyone know when the next update is coming? V-Ray for Blender is still missing a few features compared with the 3ds Max version.
Hey everybody,
Let me quickly address some of the points in this discussion.
So about the next update… If everything goes well the next release is planned for this week. We postponed this one a little bit. There are quite a lot of new features packed in the builds, and the testing phase had to be extended because of that.
As for the question about a roadmap, I’d love to share one, however the work here is very dynamic and and often times features and plans are shifted around. For our short release cycle this might not be very healthy, and lead to putting something on the roadmap that we don’t deliver and lead to disappointment. This is something that I’d prefer to avoid for now.
The nightly builds for Blender are a bit different to the ones for Max, Maya, etc. which are open for everyone and are automatic. Whenever something is fixed and done it goes in the nightly builds making them available on the next day for everybody to download and not wait for the official release. For Blender however we do this manually and because the product isn’t mature enough in terms of development we would like to have more control over when the builds are available to everyone. Not having auto nightlies is one of the reasons why we try to have official releases in a short cycle every six weeks for example. I’ll discuss this with the team and see if we can put the topic of having auto nighties on the table again.
Thank you all for the feedback!
