hmmmm he’s looking this topic. 8)
how is this standalone gonna work u think guys?
will it have its own uvw tools? or will the basic scene materials with texturing have to be made in max or any other package?
my idea of standalone is that one should be able to create all sorts of uvw types of mapping and all the texturing stuff within the app…therefore one would just need to create geometry and some IDs elsewhere…
The standalone is just a renderer. Nothing else.. at the moment anyway.
It doesnt have a GUI AFAIK

‘at the moment’ ? there’s one at the moment ?
Anyway, if it’s really being developed, any hope that it would run on Linux? If it does, I can really kiss goodbye to Autodesk & M$!!
I seem to remember that being planned.
Doesnt it work by you making the scene, and then instead of rendering pretty much exporting the whole scene to a vray format the renderer can then read, no matter its platform?
AFAIK yes thats how it works.
And im not 100% sure of a linux port but it wouldnt suprise me ![]()
Currently V-Ray standalone runs on Windows, Linux and OS X (Intel Mac only, working on PPC version). There was also a port for CentOS because someone needed it. Currently V-Ray standalone is included with the beta version of V-Ray for Maya.

 Cool! May be its time to stick a linux OS on my PS3!
A PS3 Render Farm…nice
Ok so im gonna give it a go, i’ve got linux on my PS3 now.
Does any one know which version of V-ray for Maya (linux) do i need to download from the support page to get the V-ray standalone part???
Well, V-Ray needs to be specifically compiled for Linux on PS3; the current Linux build is compiled for Intel-compatible processors only, which the PS3 processor is not. However, it is an interesting thing to see if it can be done…

Vlado

Well if you need a guinea pig for testing just shout!!
having not read all of the posts I will say this:
I think the future of vray or any kind of renderer is a standalone. Such as maxwell or fry. Look at the platforms they support. Yes pretty much none of them are as well intergrated as vray in max, but I think by having the renderer as a standalone, it allows the have this dynamic pipeline, where the developers can completely change the render core, without affecting its intergration into other apps.
Now about the future, I would very much hope that the realtime rendering in vray comes a long way. Imo the realtime rendering is the new hip thing ![]()
thats all..
