I am rendering a very simple interior scene, very schematic.
Max 6, Vray 1.9.2.1 (from explorer info)
No reflections and only basic transparency. No GI, only first bounce irradiance map, standard settings to “low”.
There is a sun light, and 24 spotlights.
Even at only 1300 by 900 pixel, the scene takes 20 minutes to render on a dual Xeon 3.4 Ghz, 800 FBS 2gig ram HT.
I am wondering if there is a way to optimize the scene.
Specifically: I am using “billboards” for some trees (yes, indoor) and vray seems to choke when rendering them.
However, I do not need refraction or other phisically accurate material characteristics, so I did *not* use a vray material.
Do you think would that make a difference?
And how do you use a vray material for just clipping out a tree mapped on a plane?
Are these Photometric? The photometric lights take longer than standard lights. You may also be able to remove some of these lights if you use other methods of lighting. I dont know your scene, so we cannot point you into a specific direction.
I have seen people remove the spots and use one large vray light comming from the ceiling. The physical spot lights has a self illuminated material to make the light fixture look ilumminated.
Also, what are your settings for the rendering, post those, and people can tell you if you are doing something that can be changed.

I think the vray material are faster, but i never did a test. If you can you should use vray materials.
Strangly with a scene i tested the “no bounce” rr map, i found that it was actually a little faster with a bounce. Then again it may be different for your scene.
