It would be great to add a thumbnail to the vrmesh format. The “export mesh” dialog would have the following added:
(*) Thumbnail pulldown: Viewport, Last VFB Render, File
(*) If file chosen, a file path dialog is un-greyed.
(*) Ability to actually see the thumbnail in the VRay Proxy file browser, like with a .max file.
Hm, good suggestion. It would require a small external program to pass that thumbnail to Windows. Perhaps ply2vrmesh can be reworked to do this also.

The cleanest solution would be a file which acts like a 3ds max file and which offers a thumbnail to the OS. ..it is maybe a shell extender which generates the thumbnail on the fly like some rawfile viewer.
there is a (most likely dead) sourceforge project ..maybe you can have a look on how they add support for different fileformats.
