is there a formula for figuring out how strong the vray sun is compared to regular max light units
in the docs it says around 200-300 but I was looking for something a bit more exact.

It depends very much on the position of the sun; the exact formula is in the paper on which the V-Ray sun and sky are based (there is a link in the help index).
