Vray Wikki?

I am wondering if at some point it would be possible to set up a Wikki for vray. This would be a help file that could be a bit easier to understand than the Vray help. And this could be something that is easily modified by users to make updating easier. The thought I had was something along the lines of many of the examples here at this forum linked to ind. topics like caustics or SSS or whatever. The end goal would be to produce a real online manual just like a “Mastering 3ds Max” book but for vray. Is something like this possible?

Cheers -

I am going to set one up. I own a dedicated server, and just waiting for the time to do it.

I never set up a wiki before, but im sure its not too hard.

i already registered, the name, I just need to set everything up.

Great initiative, I welcome it.

ok dumb question. what is a wiki?

http://wiki.org/wiki.cgi?WhatIsWiki

i didn’t know either

cheers nik!

that was my 1000th post!!!

welcome to the 4 number bracket hehe

What I was thinking about was something along these lines:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main\_Page

Thats an online encyclodepia that “anyone” can edit. Gives alot of options

its a good idea, but you have to be quite trusting that people dont spam it or give incorrect info

Yeah, you do need to be trusting, But i think enough people support the community enough that we can keep it correct. (atleast i hope so)

Yes there is a level of trust. I don’t really know how wikipedia does it. But you know we all trust eachother here. For the most part we don’t know eachother and we give eachother professional advice. We trust eachother to tell us how to set up our computers that seems pretty big to me. It may not work but it seems like a worth project.

great idea.

If the idiot content gets too high we can always integrate it with the members part of the forum or something i guess.

Catch me if you can

dont worry im trying

I think this is what we need:
http://www.flexwiki.com/

it is used on the Rhinoceros wiki as well

I installed it, i guess you guys can start adding info. I have to look into all the admin rights, preferences, etc.

O.K.,

I edited the about page as a test. Maybe you can guide a little as in where to put what kind of information.

Ok, I started adding, please feel free to edit, reorginize etc.

After we start getting more content, I will talk with peopel about being admins. Once we are happy with what is on the page we can lock it, but keep the page open for discussion. (this will allow people to discuss changes)

Vlado, 2 questions:
1. Can we use info from the Help that chaos created for vray?
2. Can you start a new thread and sticky it. That way it can be found easily.

Thanks,
Travis

Hi Travis,

good start. I think it is a good idea to use the Vray help file as a starting point and then people can post examples of usage, interesting results etc. Vray displacement for example is far from straightforward, even after reading the manual, things can be difficult. That would require though that people can upload files (jpg’s, max files, avi’s) to illustrate things.

Yeah, Im looking into image magic, which will allow for jpgs gifs and png to be uploaded resized, etc.

Depending on the growth, and support eventually maybe we can add media also (mat libraries, textures, mov tutorials)
