The VrayDistanceTex could really benefit from taking its geometry from a layer instead of static object list. There’s a couple of different reasons why this would be very beneficial: but overall it allows for smarter workflows and it’s a dynamic list of objects - I don’t have to remember or manually add objects to the list, just a reference layer.
For example this workflow for spotlights: it’s a lot faster to place recessed spotlights in a wall, by having a non renderable object punch a hole in the material with an opacity map than to change the mesh. Designs change and this not only allows for quick placement but also quick iteration without having to change the model.
See video. You’ll see that it works nicely, but everytime I duplicate an object I need to add it manually again to the list. If we could assign layers as well as objects that would be a lot handier.
