VRayEdgesTex support in opacity map

VRayEdgesTex support in opacity map would be useful to produce wireframe effect.

Hi, you can currently achieve the wireframe effect using the following setup(https://drive.google.com/file/d/1D1N...p=drive_link): (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1D1Nl7LLyRQAZTMg8GpMQLQZVQBZNEiKy/view?usp=drive_link)

  1. Create a V-Ray material
  2. Add the VRayEdgesTex in the Self-illumination
  3. Set Refraction to white and set IOR to 1.0
  4. Create a VRay2Sided material and plug the V-Ray material in the Front slot and set translucency to black.
  5. Apply the 2sided material to the object that you wish to have wireframe or use it as an Override material.
  6. If depth is not enough and you see black faces increase the Refraction bounces in Render settings tab

Hope this works for your case.

Hello Aleksandar,

Thank you for your answer.!

I have been experimenting with wireframe effect using VRayEdgesTex, with black color plugged into Composite Map on top of white VRayColor, and this Composite plugged into Refraction with 1.0 IOR. This seemed to work most of the time, but I encountered high rendering times, and even some refractive distortion artifacts when the camera flying through a small volume of closed geometry.

After some testing, I suspected that slow rendering occured because I mapped the Refraction not entirely black/white to achieve semi-transparent effect for the faces. Your setup seems to work faster for achieving similar effect.
Thank you!

Best Regards,

Dear Aleksandar,

After a little bit of testing I have a small remark:

The setup you suggested seems to work fine to reduce rendering speed, although there is a minor issue: it produces some frame blending artifacts when using “Reduce flickering” denoiser option, but only for this material.

The artifact is more visible with the above mentioned semi-transparent faces setup (see attachment), but it’s also present in your original setup.

Best Regards,

Hi Gábor,

For the blending artifacts can you try to enable the Legacy mode for the OptiX denoiser and see if they persist?

Best regards,

Aleks

Enabling the Legacy mode produces better results, yet a bit blurry.

However, I managed to get the best result by disabling “Reduce flickering” option for the Denoiser.

Thank you for your fast responses and suggestions, I think this workaround for a wireframe effect will work fine for my current goal!
