VRays Own Procedural Maps

The more I learn about VRay the more I find that what I ask for is already there. But what about procedural maps similar to Bercon maps or the Noise Map or Celular Map from Max? I guess you will ask, what problem am I trying to solve? Well, the first is that VRay RT does not work with these maps, and the second I guess is that I have a feeling that a procedural map implementation through VRay will be more geared at the consumer’s necessity, finding that Cellular or Noise Maps at Max are very cumbersome in terms of settings and I don’t get exactly what I want every time. I don’t even know if this is something that is even largely wanted or desired, but I wanted to put it out there and see what the response is. If your immediate response is “tomatoes” then so be it.

I second!

Bercon map is awesome but sometimes slow to follow with max version and also slow to debug.

we need noises that contain all the usual type: perlin, alligator, worley and voronoid and the most awesome feature is that they can be deformed by another map creating more natural patterns.

and what i really, really want is some nice procedurals that can do this inside max:

having said that if i tried to use vraymetaballs to render those id be there for a year.

Feel free to use OSL or GLSL to code any textures you want. They will work in Max, Maya, CPU, GPU and even other renderers that support OSL.

Best regards,
Vlado

If I could code what I want and if I had the time to do it I would not be one of your customer I guess! lol!

I will start from here:

I agree

Also, wasn’t there somebody that was suppose to take over the Bercon development stuff from Jerry? Wasn’t Dave or somebody going to take it over? Can’t ChaosGroup license it from Jerry and then give it some love to be part of V-Ray? Just asking, because who knows how Autodesk will change the SDK for 2017 or 2018 and each time somebody has to recompile Bercon. In the meantime nothing new is happening with Bercon as far as I’m aware

I agree here as well, I can’t code to save my life and I already have plenty to learn to get better at rendering, and little time to do so. If coding is the way I have to go then so be it, but VRay does a great job at many things and I feel that they could do great at making some procedurals. Morne’s idea to take on Bercon is great, and I think you will greatly increase the love of the community for VRay by doing that. Anyhow, there you have my extra 2 cents.

Also I sell some content on turbosquid. For that I can’t use plugins except vray. So if I have a scene with bercon noise I have to bake them if I want to sell it.

My kingdom for a clouds procedural that would let me create something like the clouds you see in EON’s “Ozone” plugin!

yes that would be awesome. although ozone is slow and hard to control.. id prefer something better, and well integrated with vray sun/sky.

Well yes in an ideal world that would be perfect, but I can imagine it would take a fair amount of resources to create something like that. Mind you, realistic procedural skies would be a feature that would blow other render engines out of the water in a field that is beginning to show signs of stagnation (I think).

I don’t think ozone has different noises than Houdini or Bercon maps already has. It looks like a mix of perlin, simplex, worley, alligator, voronoid with fBm and turbulence. I even wonder if the have distortion by map feature like houdini and bercon.

Having the problem you were foreseeing!!
The recompile of bercon maps for 2017 doesn’t work for me
not a valid win32 application error…
When you start using bercon, it is a real pain in the ass to do without, I a holding the switch to 2017 for my company just because of this FREE plugin that is always slow to update, if Chaos was selling it as a plugin for Vray I would buy it!!!

gregvfx you probably downloaded the wrong file. https://github.com/Bercon/BerconMaps/raw/master/src/DLL/BerconMaps\_2017\_64.dlt
This is the one I am using and it works fine.

no, that’s the one I downloaded after having the error message the first time. This is giving me the exact same error message.
At home I am using parallels on a mac, with a fresh install of windows ten without the 6 past years of DotNet and MSVB+ or whatever development stuff that was needed at the time… I have a feeling that it is something missing in that area…
I only test Max 2017 at home waiting to deploy it at work where I probably wouldn’t have all these issues, but I am waiting until I have none at home…
Dunno if it is really making sense though but I wasn’t having any problems with parallels and Max except for the not so slow viewport in openGL, compatibility wise everything was working when running the old Win7 with years of updates…

by the way, if Vray was officially supporting it and giving it for RT, it would be a must!!!

Hello,

The message about not valid win32 application means that you either didn’t download the whole .dlt file or somehow it got corrupted. Problems with missing dependencies, .Net and things like this show different messages.
Can you try downloading it again ?

And by the way - the one at github - I compiled and uploaded it so we are kind of supporting it

Best regards,
Yavor

@gregvfx
What is the filesize of the one you are using? I had the same error when I downloaded it first from github but my filesize was only 32kb(I think) and not 364kb.

372 kb…
Dave Baker from Max Underground asked me to try and install VisualC++ but it didn’t help…
It is a mystery, I will probably give it a try at work anyway.

364 kb in windows

tried downloading it 4 or 5 times now…
