Vrayscans vs vray materials

I’m curious. What is the difference between the vray car paint material and a vray scanned car paint material? Also, the same question for a fairly simple material like chrome or basic glass ?

Sure, you can do the same with the stochastic flakes, but it is much more time-consuming to get it looking right. The flake pattern, the orange peel in the clear coat is all there in the VrScans, you don’t have to set up anything by hand.
For simple stuff like chrome the difference is negligible, but the more complex the material gets, the more advantages the VrScans have. We use it all the time for stuff like floor carpets in cars, fabric ceilings, leather seats, carpaint, you name it. The amount of detail in these is incredible. On some black plastic scan for example, you can accurately render the grain pattern, also the distinctive color shift of the coating. It is hard to describe, you have to test it to see the difference.
We had some physical samples sent to Chaosgroup for scanning, some metal trim which would be nearly impossible to create in a traditional workflow. The VrScan we got back looks and behaves just like the real thing.

I thought there may be problems with glass. Vrayscans certainly does sound and look very impressive. Subscription time soon I think.
