without getting too personal i would like to discuss this topic.
Current position:
@ 16/hr
Work in a digital media dept. in a large scale architectural firm using 3ds max Adobe suite, CAD…you name it.
I originally was accepted to work here under a part time schedule (3 days a week) and only to work within the Digital Media Department. Doing renderings and some other software work…
But from the second i started working here i have worked 5 days a week plus weekends when needed for over 3 months, worked for dozens of people and am using almost 6 different programs at any given time. Basically i am doing a heck of a lot more then i was asked to.
I am getting increasingly better with my renderings. Thanks to V-Ray for sketchup. They work exclusively in 3dsmax (Mental ray :-[ ) and the quality of my renderings are superior to theirs.
What should i do?
What kind of wages can i ask for?
I have a BA in Interior Design, software nut and an extremely good 3d visualizer, and have successfully surpassed all expectations of my job.
I am thinking i can ask for 25/hr if they cant afford to make me full time + benefits.
What do you guys think?
What kind hourly wages to good 3d architectural visualizers get?
In my opinion, if I had the same qualifications as you I would definitely ask for a raise. However, with that being said, we are obiviously in a tough job market. Before you do anything, call around or do some job search to see if the job market is better for a person of your qualifications. I definitely think what you are asking for is reasonable.
This thread has nothing to do with V-Ray for SketchUp - I’d suggest CGarchitect.com would be a better forum to post such industry/profession related questions, you also get a much broader band of the arch viz spectrum than only VfSU users.
Defiantly ask for a raise. Though, to waht - I don’t know. This all depends on what the market is where you are. I’m not familiar with the US market. But 16$/hour - that’s a joke. Here you get paid more as a part time assistant in a store.
Apart from CGarchitecture which Jackson suggested - you might get some good feedback at Sketchucation as well.
Gallystops, definately ask for a raise. 16 bucks an hour isnt really enough for the amount of work you say you are producing.
Also post on CGarchitect like others have suggested - there are alot of U.S. based visualisers on those boards. Theres alot of other countries represented on there too, and you’d be shocked at how cheap some of those guys work for.
16 is definitely far too low. I would run at a 30 minimum if it was me. By your description it sounds like you only render scenes, is this the case? Or do you do post processing and other image modifications?
