I apologise for the hook in the title, but hey, you clicked on this one! So, as you are here, I really would like to ask for a favor. Yes, we are adding new settings in the V-Ray material related to displacement, and we would like to hear more about whether the changed behavior regarding “Keep continuity” is working for you. Previously, this setting was set to Off internally. But with the addition of the new settings - Amount, Shift, Water level, we wanted to switch On “Keep continuity” for all the materials (this setting does not have a UI, it is set by us internally). It is not possible to leave some of the materials with “Keep continuity” on, and others with Off, due to further complications. So the main question is, how do you feel about this change? Once it is On it will affect old scenes. Let us know, and thank you for sparing some time to play with this build. In order to test the functionality, you will need 3ds Max 2025.
Woahh, I was waiting for this, big thanks!!!
Thanks, Carlos. Let us know what you think when you have a bit of time to test it.
I want to give it a try, but i am still using 3ds max 2024
I will ask the devs to generate 2024 build.
Thank you, please inform, i will give it a try
Here we have 23, 24, 25, 26 builds. Thank you, everyone!
yeiii, thanks, I was installing max 25 just for this
Hello,
Is it fully suported by Vray GPU ?
Will there be a subdivision/edge lenght feature in the future (as there is in the Vray displacement modfier) ?
Thanks for the works,
Best,
Nicolas
Have already test it on Max 2026, working great!!!
And the new stuff, amazing!!!
Havent explore everything yet, but im glad this new options have been introduced.
What about the “Keep continuity” behavior? Is it going to break the old scenes for you? Is it crucial for you?
The current build is focussed moslty on CPU. As the focus is really to understand whether “Keep continuity” being On is going to be an issue for your workflows and not supporting the same behavior in old files.
About individual edge lengths. We were discussing this internally a lot. There are pros and cons. Currently, the global settings in the render setup are working as before, so you have an Edge length setting from there. It is applied to all the materials.
Nevertheless, this is a topic that could be extended further.
I prefer to have the “Keep continuity” on, doesnt break anything on my old scenes, I always have prepared geometry to use displacement on surfaces and only use modifier with keep continuity with “solids”, but maybe some people would rather to have the option on global settings.
While I am not able to test the build at the moment I can tell you that we want keep continuity on in VrayDisplacementMod probably 99% of the time. I guess I have encountered once or twice where it caused issues because it moved an entire edge outward, but those are few and far between
With this new setup would we be able to override keep continuity to off by using a VrayDisplacementMod modifier the old way? That might solve both issues? Default to on, but allow an override to off???
thanks.
The modifier is an option, yes. Nothing has changed there.
Thanks
So with the new VRayMtl would we have to use the extremely old school modifier method (nothing in the displacement slot of VRayMtl— all settings in the modifier)? Or could we use the hybrid method where you have the displacement map in VRayMtl and then use the modifier just to tweak the settings?
Honestly I rarely use that hybrid method now and typically just use the extremely old school modifier only method, mainly because it’s easier in case I need to tweak settings like shift later.
Thank you very much, i have download it, will try and feedback here
This is an upcoming change that allows you to use our products without the License Server. It’s already deployed for some of our products. You can get more details here: Cloud Licensing
The short answer is - you can try it and switch back and forth between Cloud licensing and the license server (without uninstalling the license server) - either by re-installing or by using the “Change License Settings” utility (more on this here: Changing the Product License Setup)
Long answer: Uninstalling the License Server is not a requirement. You can uninstall it, but if you’re using another Chaos product that is not cloud-licensing-capable yet, or if you need to use an older version of V-Ray - you will still need the license server for those cases. Choosing “cloud” means using “cloud” only for the cloud-capable products - anything else on your device will still use the License Server.
Another thing to note is that cloud licensing requires a login. If you’re logging in with your Chaos account today (with the License Server) - you can switch to Cloud Licensing.
do you mean everytime when i want to use vray, i need to log in with password?
if yes, this is not convienience for person like e who always forgot password.
