ive been asked to recreate this. apparently the artist did this a long time ago and lots of changes were made. there shall be lots of landscaping to this project obviously however my biggest concern is the waterfall. the whole waterfall will be rock unlike what the artist did by leaving a section bare. how should i go about tackeling a splashing waterfall. this is for a still image…keep in mind im working with the drawings from the architects. so if my proportions look off compaired to the artists work its because his proportions are wrong.

If you’re just producing stills, then I’d recommend doing the waterfall post-rendering. I’ve never done a waterfall, but I’ve struggled with water effects myself. I don’t have any of the big-end plugins for this sort of thing, and I was very disappointed with the results from the Max Particle systems, so I tend to do this in Photoshop:
I remember seeing this done on a vizdepot challenge. Rendered in mental ray, but all done with masks. Never got round to giving it a go myself, but might come in handy…
thanks for the help. seems photoshop will need to be the thing. none of those tutorials will help since i already know that stuff the problem is that it isnt a normal straight waterfall. a sculpted rockface will be there so i need water flowing over rock.
percy. thats brilliant. i could probably do the same with simcloth. pin the edge at the top of the waterfall then let the cloth drape over the rocks. then i can trim off excess on the bottom or something after i colapse to editable poly

Thats some damn nice photoshop work you got there!!!
I really gotta learn how to do that sorta stuff one day. Would be very handy.
Also have you noticed the weird color splotches in those renders of yours?
Da_Elf:
How close is the shot going to be? Or are you just reproducing the drawing.. same camera angle and everything?
well his proportions are all wrong so im not sure if its the same camera angle. once i fit in the pool and the appartments then its fine. the cloth thing actually didnt work in my case. ill just PS it
DaForce: Thanks, fella. I drove my colleagues mad that day with my stylus: tap-tap-tap-tap-tap-tap-tap-tap-tap-tap
I had noticed the splotches, yeah, I meant to go back and sort them out but obviously forgot. This was one of the first images I did with VRay (VRay Free, I think) and I didn’t know what those artifacts were. I’m pretty familiar with them now…
I dont suppose you can thro any tips or files my way for doing water turbulence like that… really great stuff. (only if you got time… dont want to put you out)

Errrr…I don’t know what tips to give really, Da Elf.
I had some good photo references, and like I said I’ve got a Wacom tablet & stylus which makes painting in PS a doddle.
I used a water/noise mixed bump map on a flat plane for the river water, then added a mesh smooth modifier on the water plane just around the faces at the front of the ferry. The river plane is bound to a couple of ‘Wake’ WSMs (from BlurStudios, I think) to get the ripples along the side of the ferry.
In Photoshop, I used 2 soft brushes, a 1 pixel and a 3 pixel, with about 80% opacity. The important thing to remember when doing the foam is to follow the surface of the water, which is why it helps to have clearly defined ripples etc. For the spray I just went mad with the stylus: tap-tap-tap-tap-tap-tap-tap-tap-tap
I don’t know what else to say except that occasionally holding your thumb up in front of the monitor seems to help, as does regarding your monitor from the other side of the office with your head at a strange angle, frowning, tutting, clicking your tongue and muttering to yourself about how Monet never had to worry about ‘scratch disks’.
