ahoy hoy

we’re making some new splash screens for our webpage, and this is the first one in what should be a series of four or five. would be good to gets some C&Cs before we put it up. it will have some text and buttons and that over it, but we’re just looking for comments on the image at the moment

I like it but it would be nice if the wood table was reflecting a light above (just for specular and reflections) and the knobs are a bit gray for me, but it’s been years since I’ve seen an etch-a-sketch!

i like the idea of getting some specular reflections on the table - might have to be at a funny angle though as i don’t want any on the screen.

you’re right, the knobs are a little too grey.

Adding to my last comments, I would get a little more drama in the scene, there are not many shadows in the scene. I would put a bit of an orange light on the right side to create a few shadows falling left as well.

Agree with MoonDoggie. Also I would have a look at a lighter table top and a contact shadow under the etch-a-sketch.

Looking at it some more I would consider using a different tabletop wood, something lighter with fine machine grain that fits more in line with the architectural rendering on the etch-a-sketch (which by the way looks great!), try something like a MDF condensed wood or something. The wood currently being used has a disconnect from the content of the render imo. And keep up the great work.

i’m trying it with a lighter wood now, but i’m not sure i like it so much. i like the almost cartoonish quality of the darker wood that’s on there at the moment - like something you might find in some googie architecture. i might give the mdf or chipboard a go - maybe alse concrete.

The lighter wood looks more like Toy Story! I don’t like it more or less than the darker one. The spec looks very nice and so do the shadows. You could darken the shadows even more :slight_smile:

Looks pretty good. What does your watermark say? “I stole this image from” and I can’t make out the rest…

Nice idea! I kind of like the second one, the wood on the first one looks great, but it can be a little distracting.

I think it’s getting there.

I think there are too many yellow tones going on now: ruler, pencils and table. I’d rotate the ruler to reveal the green so it compliments the red of the etch-a -sketch and then warm up the wood on the desk to more of a beech veneer. I’d also give the paper a subtle thickness.

Hope that’s the sort of C & C’s you’re after?
